{ This is a guy I played and beat at a tournament at BASIS Chandler. } 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5 4.Be3 { This is a little early to commit the bishop to the e3 diagonal.  I think black can either play Nbd7 Be7 and proceed normally or play Ng4, which wins the bishop pair or forces white to make a serious concession, like retreating it to d2. } 4...Be7 5.Be2 Nbd7 6.h3 c6 7.Qd2 Qc7 { This is solid.  My preference is to just 0-0 against this setup.  When white 0-0-0s against the Philidor, black can often get a monstrous attack by playing b5 b4 and then if Na4 Qa5 b3 (to defend the knight) and then Nb6 clearing the a file after NxN axN.  In that case, since I develop the queen to a5, I hold off on Qc7 to save a tempo. } 8.O-O-O b5 9.f4 b4 10.Na4 { Here I saw Nxe4 as just powerful because the knight can go to g3 after.  It's well worth trading the e pawn for the b pawn because the queen is precariously placed on b5 (open b file!!).  But continuing with my previously mentioned plan of Qa5 is going to give you a thematic win.  b3 Nb6! and black's attack is much better than white's } 10...exd4 { Now white is back in the game } 11.Bxd4 c5 12.Bxf6 Nxf6 13.Bb5+ Kf8 { This is MVP. } 14.Qe2 g6 15.b3 Kg7 { I like the fianchettoed king happy.png } 16.Nf3 a6 17.Bc4 Bb7 18.e5 Ne4 { Solid play. } 19.Qe3 Rad8 20.Bd5 Ng3 21.Rhe1 Nf5 22.Qe4 Bc8 { when in a cramped position, piece trades are good.  Black is more cramped so allow the trade.  The computer just went from better for black to better for white } 23.g4 Nh6 24.e6 f6 25.f5 Ng8 26.h4 { Nh4 is better, attacking the weak g6 which is hard to defend and forcing g5 which will later be a target to h4. } 26...Rf8 27.g5 fxg5 28.fxg6 Nf6 { Solid defense and countering on black's part } 29.Qd3 Nxd5 30.Qxd5 Bb7 { Nice combo. } 31.Qc4 Bxf3 32.Rd3 hxg6 33.c3 a5 34.Rf1 Be2 35.Rxf8 Rxf8 36.Qe4 Bxd3 37.Qxd3 gxh4 38.Nb2 bxc3 39.Nc4 d5 40.Ne3 d4 41.Nd5 Qd6 42.Qe4 Rf1+ 43.Kc2 h3 44.a4 h2 { Well converted }
