My take on the Carlsen Jeans gate

Sort:
insane

So for some reason, every site BESIDES chess.com supports Fide, everyone on these forums thinks magnus was innocent.

On the jeans:

There is a strict dress code, magnus knows about it. Ian Nepo wore sports shoes, against the dress code, instead of throwing a temper tantrum like carlsen, he actually changed his shoes and competed. Carlsen was already down a point, his worst performance in decades obviously he was mad and decided to withdraw. Same with the hans niemann controversy, he had the longest win streak ever, of course he was mad and had a fit. Especially by some rando (at the time). Same with this, but he could have actually paid the fine and be let off with a warning.

Summary:

Q: Do you think fide’s dress code is stupid?

A: No. Jeans are casual wear, this is very important, they shouldn’t show up with men’s air jordan 4 retro fears and a hoodie, or a crop top and skirt, they should be showing up in suits and dress shoes but oh come on. Jeans are literally business casual. Ripped jeans I would understand though.

Q: Do you think Magnus handed the situation poorly?

A: Yes. Very. He could have just paid the fine but nope. We have another hans niemann cheating scandal but it’s not about cheating.

But considering the age ranges on this site compared to other social medias, I am not surprised that you think complaining makes you the victim.

I would like to see you pay 200$ just because you wore jeans to a chess tournament. I mean what professionalism, they should have a choice on what to wear. Obviously it should also be somewhat appropriate but jeans and sports shoes should be allowed, they are already in most local tournaments

Some things i disagree with here

Agreed

pyraminxmaster2013

Yes I agree. He knew that these were the rules and just decided that he could be above them. He made such a huge fuss about it and he probably thinks that everyone hates FIDE for it. Honestly, he probably thinks that people will be mad that they wont be seeing him at the final day/round and that they would be paying just to see other players and not him. I actually went to see the final game LIVE and I didn't care one bit that he wasn't there. I've never been closer to such top players in the world, and I didn't care that Carlsen got disqualified.

$200 is absolutely nothing for Magnus he has probably won over $7 million just from his world championship matches and probably $20 million+ in total

Quite frankly, its not entire about the sheer amount. 200$ is a hefty amount probably for everyone else including the person who said that he should have just paid the fine but maybe to for Magnus, but its about the inconvienience it causes and it shows that he stands his grounds. Many previous world champions such as Fischer and Kasparov have also retaliated against FIDE because of their unfair and nonsense policies such as the dress code.

Yes, but he stands his ground against the rules! It's not always right to do that. The rules have been there for a while and he knows them and chooses to break it

They shouldn't. They should be able to wear whatever allows them to perform best and is appropriate

Agreed

  1. Magnus is Richity Richrich! Paying $200 is nothing to him.
  2. You cannot compare local tournaments to the Blitz World Championship FINALS. It is a FAR more important and special occasion, thus, requiring more formal wear than mere jeans.

It was actually pretty cool! For the most of it I wasn't actually looking at the games, but watching in awe of how close I was to these chess legends! Hikaru,Pragg,Ivanchuk,Neimann, Even some GM's that I've met before!
