Not a totally new idea, and actually influenced a little in part by this automate suggestion.
In Chess Mercenaries (or Mercenary Chess) you are given a a certain ammount of points in which to spend on an army. You then plan the placement of that army within certain ranks without your opponents knowledge of where you are placing those pieces. When both players have spent their points and placed all their pieces; each side is revealed and play can start with White.
Play is like regular Chess, but importantly, there is no double first move for the pawn, there is no en passent and there is no castling. Fairy pieces are however available for your army.
-
Regular - on an 8 by 8 board, pieces can be placed within the first 3 ranks
Optimum - on a 16 by 16 board, players can place pieces within the first 6 ranks.
Prices of pieces are modfied according to which board is being played upon (and also variant types).
-
If enough people are interested I'll draw up some schematics and start (yet another) variant club.
Variant of this in Russia is known as Battle Chess
8x8 board, standard piece set (8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 1 queen, 1 king).
There are 2 stages of game.
1 stage - placement. You plan the placement of that army within 1-4 ranks without your opponents knowledge of where you are placing those pieces. When both players have placed all their pieces; each side is revealed and play can start with White.
2 stage - like regular chess also without En Passant and castling
