Why would anyone want to do that?
New variant Idea.
i think this kinda feels like capture anything. nobody really uses the "capture anything" system but it could create some interesting tactical possibilities.
Like normal chess, but queens/rooks/bishops/knights can depromote to a piece that's a lower rank.
Example: for white's turn, white could change a knight to a pan or bishop
Hi, it could be an interesting concept. But this should be as follows: probably give pieces possibilities to change their identity, with a number of possible tokens to be used. For example, any piece could change to another piece (could be a higher ranked: Bishop or Knight to Rook or Queen, or also a lower ranked: A queen to a Knight). This "change" allows ornot additional capabilities but for a limited number of moves. This can help create mating threats or win material etc. Sometimes, a pawn is more valuable than other stronger pieces or knight is more valuable than even the queen.
If you have a clear idea, it could be interesting to play test it here.

i dont like it very much. The original idea was much more interesting. also, people could use a rook and come to the 8th rank, then "depromoting" to a pawn, which promotes to queen. A knight or bishhop also can do that, but in more moves. depromoting to pawn in 7th rank is a very good idea in my idea. Depromoting a queen to a smothered-mating knight is awesome. Depromoting queen to rook in order to zugzwang and prevent stalemate in an endgame is also a good idea. A very interesting variant!

If they're already on eight, they're stuck there, or instead we can do only bishop or knight can depromote to a pawn to make it fair, so rook>knight>bishop>pawn>queen Also, I meant to type pawn, not pan, but we could add a pan piece.
The pawn could promote to a pan, which then has to move back to the 1st rank to promote, the pan would move down, and capture diagonally down so basically the reversed pawn.

Just a random idea i came up with because of my typing.
I really don't think this would work
I'm gonna suggest something that is half-beta related. When somebody submits an idea, you can play it on live chess, and then after that it asks you if you like it or not, and why do you like it or what can be done to make it better, and once there's 500 votes, it goes into beta only and then becomes an official variant.

It's not that easy, imagine the work that would be implementing every single idea
