Nullifying the Mortimer Trap

Greetings Chess Kings bk.pngwk.png & Queensbq.pngwq.pngToday we present the Mortimer Trap. This is a chess opening trap in the Ruy Lopez line named after James Mortimer. The Mortimer Trap is a true trap in the sense that Black deliberately plays an inferior move hoping to bait White into making a mistake. Here is an interesting line whereby White neutralizes Black's play of the Mortimer Trap:

1. e4          e5
2. Nf3       Nc6
3. Bb5       Nf6
4. d3         Ne7 (Here's Black's trap inviting White's wn.png to capture e5 bp.png)
5. Nxe5    c6
6. Nc4!!    c6xB ?? (Black gets greedy when there's no need for such greed!)
7.Nd6++

I recommend familiarizing yourself with Black's idea behind the Mortimer Trap. There's some interesting variations that I recommend you explore in this opening. It's certainly a line that could be employed in bullet and blitz games. Enjoy happy.png

Very interesting trap for Ruy Lopez players. I might even use it to try in a non-competitive match  even though I'm a queens gambit player
