Greetings Chess Kings & Queens! Today we present the Mortimer Trap. This is a chess opening trap in the Ruy Lopez line named after James Mortimer. The Mortimer Trap is a true trap in the sense that Black deliberately plays an inferior move hoping to bait White into making a mistake. Here is an interesting line whereby White neutralizes Black's play of the Mortimer Trap:
6. Nc4!! c6xB ?? (Black gets greedy when there's no need for such greed!)
7.Nd6++
I recommend familiarizing yourself with Black's idea behind the Mortimer Trap. There's some interesting variations that I recommend you explore in this opening. It's certainly a line that could be employed in bullet and blitz games. Enjoy
