Is there a way to find 4pc games that were played on the old server (pre-merge) or have they been deleted into the ether?

yes, https://www.chess.com/variants/custom/game/1/161/1 this game was played on August 7, 2018 and is the oldest game findable

All the 4pc archive (games) played before August 2018 are DELETED

that's not exactly what the OP asked and is kind of misleading... of course all of the Beta games were deleted (i.e. around 2017-2018), but still if someone less informed came by this they'd think that the merge somehow ruined the server's archive as well

The merge has nothing to see with the archives. It's another topic. The archives DO include all the games since the moment when the games were stored, and it was 3 years before the merge.
