online vs otb

Hello group;

I would appreciate your opinions.  I play all my chess online. Recently I met a player from this site who lives close by, so we've got together a few times for games.  My game feels fuzzy otb. Is it the 2d-3d thing? or having a person in front of me?  or something else?  Has anyone else experienced this?  Thanks for the input.

I have not played much otb chess but I can hazard a guess if that is OK?

I think it is because online you have time to see everything on the board plus you also have access to databases etc. online whereas otb you have just you, the board and your brain.

I could of course be completely wrong here ...

MasterBlundered

this might be a stupid question but whats otb?

blackfirestorm

otb = over the board or in another way it means basically 2 people + a chess board = real life chess

Vaheguru

haha, yo Mark, I have experienced that too!

OVER THE SUMMER, i played a lot of online chess and got used to it!

and when i played my first game otb after a long while, i lost even thought the other player sucked

i made some stupid moves and got screwed in the end!

so, i recommend that you play a balance of games otb and online chess! that way, it might have you ready for winning in any style of chess!

I know, I experienced the same problem!

Online I don't use databases, and I only start moving everything around on an analysis board until I'm 3 moves deep into a variation, I still think its tougher playing otb.

1.  Your opponent is in front of you, so there is a bit of nervousness.

2.  You simply can't move the pieces around, at all.

3.  A bit of the 2D 3D thing going on.

4.  You can't take 3 days to make a move.

Not to mention that if its with a clock you have to remember to punch it, and if it's a tournament you have to record your moves as well.
