For players rated 1100+

1. a Great opeing to learn the ways of chess for lower rated people like myself is the king pawn's opening

1.e4    e5

this is a great opening to help a person develop your pieces and undermine the control of the centre and to get your king to safety. for egg.

a second opening i like is the italian game
and a good defence

2. for more experienced players that uderstands the game

here for white ill also recommend the Ruy Lopez or in this case the queens gambit. for multiple resons

1. centre control

2. having control of the pawn tension with c4

3. It can easily lead to a isolated D-pawn(with is not nice)

4. It is easy to fined good outposts for you knights and bishops

5. Black will have diffuclty to equalize

6. Played correctly white should have a fairly good advantage leaving the opening

and so on.

My personal favourite defence is the kings Indian or the queens Indian defence
