The French defence is used quite frequently even at the highest level. In fact Anish Giri recently made a whole video series on it - it is worth checking out the opening since it can teach one a lot about pawn structures and basic plans.
Naturally, there are many variations to choose from, I used to play the Rubinstein but I found it too passive. These days I am almost always playing the Sicilian or sometimes the Alekhine if I am in the mood for a bot of suffering!
