Ok what I want to do is to have openings listed in a methodical  way with each variation having a list of games under it. For example

Repertoire:- Sicilian

                White-

                        Sicilian Schevengenin (Pardon my spelling)

                                 Classical Variation

                                                Games

I can't do it with Scid although I have Chess Position Trainer   Its not a database. Does anyone know a free software to do this?

I think you can make a tree mask to do this. It's really quite a powerful feature.

Create a new mask (from the tree window menu), then add moves to the mask by right clicking, and "Add To Mask". Then go into move, right click and "Comment Position", and add the games you want to remember to this comment.

As you mentioned SCID won't do as you ask.  BUT have you explored other ways to accomplish the same end result.

As I comptete my studies on chesss openings the Repertiore files become big & slow.  So instead of a master Sicilian OB I am splitting the different variations into individual files.   It is tedious to load the games into them  I usually stop after the 15th move. I am developing over time a great resource as I can load in all kinds of notes with each move along with TOGA results

Second option works well on large databases.  On the event line I enter the opening and what ever vaariations that follow  KP / Sicilian:Najdorf:..ect. Then just sort the DB via Search, Header {copy - paste  KP / Sicilian:Najdorf}.  Most of the time I sort the Database via Maintinance Sort { event, length} or {event, eco, length} prior to doing the Search function.

I have a personal game DB of almost 300 games & another DB over 1/2 million games played by all kinds of high rated players.  The above helps me.

I am sure there are other options
