Opening Theory MegaThread

Ok so back to the Steinitiz Attack in response to Petrov’s Defense... why can’t black play bc5 after the exchange to control the center, and also is it better to take d4 with the knight or queen, or not at all?
White should play e5 instead of capturing

So is the steintiz attack (petrov defense) good for beginners? I'm looking for an interesting opening that isn't difficult to use effectivly.

Am I mistaken or would Qd4x trap the knight?
qxd4 looks like it traps the knight but black can play d5 or f5 to hold on and if white takes En Passant the knight recaptures backwards

It's good for white but you're not going to get it often because the Petrov is already a decently rare opening

Just an absolutely very fun opening to play, would white be considered better here because black had to retreat the knight?
Playing 3. d4 is a good way to add imbalance to the otherwise very symmetrical Petrov but there are better options for white I think

It seems like the majority of my games are either the Petrov or some sort of Italian game, but maybe it’s because I play bishop’s opening almost exclusively as white
The Bishop's opening is actually designed to avoid the drawish Petrov lol

this is one qxd4 line, though i doubt your opponents will play like this unless they are gms
It’s funny but it seems like most of the moves for black in the steinitz attack are almost forced to avoid a blunder
Well black can also play 3. nxe4 so there's a whole different aspect to the opening than just 3. exd4
