against nf6 I play Catalan but Trompowsky is good I guess

DasBurner

What do you guys think of this alternate to playing d5 in the Vienna gambit?

And black is able to retain his extra pawn with a decent (?) position

I personally hate playing it as black because the positions end up so unorthodox

did you just say I play the tromp

Anybody have any insight on the Tromposky? Good or bad? What are some advantages that come out of it?

Seems like a rare enough opening already with d4, then the odd f6... although I'd be lying if I said I've never seen this position before, albeit rare. Is it a good retaliation against f6?

it's sound...

unfortunately.

Can someone explain to me how to play the Steinitz Attack as black? I thought you could only play it as white?

Yes it's only an opening from white

Ok, that’s what I thought. In analysis of a game I just played it said “Steinitz Attack” when I took as black.. must just mean the main line.

yeah the name of the opening is for both players, white played the Steinitz attack therefore the game is a Steinitz attack game if that makes sense

DasBurner

...yes...

i think

Gotcha, so white established the attacks and black established the defenses

Yeah there's a memey opening called the Rat defense (which I actually have a 100% winrate somehow probably luck) but there's no name for it when you play the setup as white...

Is the main goal to simply double blacks pawns, or is their a deeper goal?

that's the main point

mega gay if I may say so myself

The rat defense is a misnomer. It's actually the pribyl pirc.
