Hello! Today, we'll learn the mainline to the Four Knights Game: Scotch Variation. It starts with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6

Then, White plays 3. Nc3 and Black responds with 3.Nf6, which is the Four Knights Game. To enter the Scotch Variation, White plays 4.d4. The mainline would then continue with ...exd4. White plays 5. Nxd4 and continues with ...Bb4 6.Nxc6 bxc6 7.Bd3

White trades knights because if he didn't, let's say he plays ...Bd3 immediately, then Black plays ...Nxd4, taking the strong center knight. Anyway, Black plays the agressive move ...d5. Now, in this position, White can play many variations. The best move, and the move we are looking at, is 8.exd5. Some engines say that the best move after this is ...O-O, but the move in the mainline is ...cxd5. Sometimes, in this position, White will play 9.Bd2, but the line that we will play is 9.O-O O-O.

Finally, a very popular move and what most people consider the mainline, is 10.h3. As a conclusion, this is a good line and the mainline of the Four Knights Game: Scotch Variation.
