your opponent can deviate from theory whenever they want, so learning tons of theory at a lower levels generally isn't a great idea. That being said, knowing three moves of the common main lines doesn't hurt. Most of my games at 1700 use around 7 book moves and then my opponent deviates

Aren’t openings theoretical? Every time I see a played out opening, everything has to work out right that your opponent does. Opinions?
