Something that I have become interested in lately are the new updated Sherlock Holmes programs for television. I have enjoyed watching CBS's Elementary as a great way to wind down with good entertainment at the end of the day - and I have been blown away by the BBC's Sherlock. The clever literary connections to the original Aurthur Conan Doyle stories, and the interesting plots and characters make both shows a lot of fun.

Topics to discuss might be: favorite episodes, favorite Doyle novel or short story, other good tv adaptations, or writing in general in Victorian England.

I've read all of the original Sherlock Holmes stories, and they are one of my favorite fiction series that I have read. I've watched a little bit of Sherlock, and it's a good show, but I feel that the modern adaptation aspect makes it a little less authentic (especially when technology is a part of the plot). There are also some clear deviations from the original stories in the show- for example, the relationship between Sherlock and Mycroft in the show is much more complex than in the stories. My favorite Sherlock Holmes story is "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire" - I think it shows, more than any other story, how Holmes uses Occam's Razor and eliminates the unlikely possibilties (of supernatural influences in this case) quicker than anyone else does, then proceeds to solve the mystery as he usually does.

I'd like to ask a favor of any members of this group who can fluently read German- I love math and I'm trying to read a copy of Riemann's Nachlauss, which features much of his great mathematical work, including on the Riemann Hypothesis. I know very little German and though I can understand the mathematics portion of the Nachlauss, the majority of the work is text. I would like to get as much as I can out of the Nachlauss and I would be very much in gratitude to anyone who can help translating it. I've attached the link to the PDF of the copy I'm trying to read. Thank you in advance.

mein sohn:

i very much dislike the bbc version of  sherlock holmes.  sherlock holmes would never use nicotine patches.  sherlock holmes was a creature of victorian england and he upheld victorian values and victorian prejudices.

this is the loss.  political correctness has emptied victorian england of the truth.

the sherlock holmes recall comes in two departments.  the first is the stories of doyle and as a child, most importantly, were the wartime movies of world war two where sherlock and nigel defended england.

this is the sherlock i remember.  the movies and tv shows afterward may be entertaining but they are not the true sherlock holmes, who used his intelligence instead of theatrics and gimmicks.

i forgive the young who do not understand the value of what i write about.  i do not forgive their parents.

the parents have failed england.  you wanted benefits more than you wanted to be englishmen ( thus the problem in scotland ).

That's very interesting. I've always wanted to learn C++ or another one of the C  languages. How do you program a calculator in C++?

And meanwhile, in Python (or wolframalpha.com, I guess Laughing), you could just type in 9**500 Tongue Out
