You are getting so close to 1300! Its been really nice to watch your progress. You play totally different lines than me so its interesting to look at your games.

Avatar of PapaShepherd

Thanks! I had hoped I could get close by the end of this plan but I'm almost there 2/3 of the way through. Now my goal is to cross and stay there through the end to consolidate/feel like it's not a fluke. happy.png

BTW - do you follow any of the ChessGoals plans?

Avatar of jdcannon

I follow a custom plan that I put together that suits me. It's ~50% slow games 50% reviewing those slow games and then I work with two different coaches for about 4 hours a week. Altogether, it's something like 20 hours a week studying chess.

Are your slow games online or OTB? I think I saw you say somewhere in one of the forums that your goal is to make NM - exciting! happy.png

Avatar of jdcannon

I play at least one slow game online each day, and then I play OTB whenever I can. I post my analysis of my games to youtube if you are ever interested in looking at me trying to figure out why I lost I try to mostly post videos of my loses.

1300!

I won my slow game, yay. It felt very back and forth to me. I built what I thought was a good position then inexplicably gave it away only to get it back a few moves later. Taking a break over the weekend from games, will just work on my puzzle book. happy.png

Week #8 Ratings and Tasks Updates

Ratings Update:

                               Start        Week 4           Week 8

Chess.com Rapid :: 1122 -> 1211 (+89) -> 1305 (+94)

Chess.com Daily :: 1294 -> 1306 (+12)  -> 1297 (-9)

Chess.com Puzzles :: 2001 -> 1817 (-184) -> 2202 (+385)

Daily Games :: happy Only have a couple of games going and getting in my time.

Puzzles :: grin Really doing MUCH better on puzzles the last week or so. I did paper puzzles for awhile to slow myself down and have jumped to a new high on chess.com.

Games :: happy Seven games this week and two were long 60|30 games as I am playing in a tournament for one of my clubs. 1-1 in the 60
30 games and 4-1 in the 15|10 games. The final 60|30 game got me over the 1300 threshold. We'll see if I can stay there.

Lessons/Endgames :: happy Reviewed Part Two of Silman''s Endgame Course. So far, not anything earth shattering but I think that makes sense as the rating range for the first two parts are ranges I've already eclipsed. Part Three gets into King and Pawn which I'm really looking forward to understanding better.

I've played three games since crossing 1300 and lost the first two due to complete blunders. Winning and blundered a queen and then lost my place and walked into a M1. Not fun. The third was a better game, so at least I finish February at 1300.

Those were some sick tactics in that game!

Its pretty normal to reach a peak and lose a couple. If you think about you, when you hit a peak you are likely playing on average tougher players than normal so likely to start to see results that aren't quite so good.

That said, new peaks on the way!

Avatar of PapaShepherd

I'm glad it's normal as I'm definitely losing! I'd played 10 games this week and was +2/-8 shock Dropped over 40pts in rating...won a couple in a row now but has been rough. Most of my losses were complete blunders. I do believe I'm getting to the point I need to take a break/cut back on games. Spending more time calculating in games and calculating in puzzles is a lot more strain on the brain.

I will spend some time analyzing the more worthy games over the weekend but perhaps not play for a few days.

Avatar of jdcannon

If it makes you feel better I +3/-4 in my training games this week and my losses were all people rated 100-150 rating points lower than me.  I am also down 40 rating points.

Week #9 Tasks & Updates

Daily Games :: happy Getting in my 5-10min/day.

Puzzles :: happy Finished the Giannotos tactics book this week and will start back on chess.com puzzles next week..

Games :: frustrated 12 Rapid games this week, going +4/-8. Not a good first week of being rated 1300, of which I no longer am! Had a string of 6 losses and 8 of 10 where I was constantly blundering. It was like games from 5-6 months ago. I took a break and played blitz games for a few days and that was refreshing. Not much calculation and was nice to see my blitz rating jump 100+ points in a few days. Back to calculating in Rapid games this week with a goal to get back over 1300 and NOT BLUNDER. Just need to take more care and look before I leap.

Lessons/Endgames :: happy This week's item was chess.com lessons but as I had a lesson, I counted that.

Total Time ~10 hours

A bit lazy in posting my analyzed games this week. I have struggled in my Rapid games since passing 1300. A lot of my losses have been horrible blunders. A couple weeks left in the plan to finish strong!

Week #10 Tasks & Updates

Daily Games :: meh A little low on my daily time. While I understand the point of the daily games, to play super accurate chess, I admit they are not my favorite. I had two tournaments about to begin the next round and dropped out of them as I did not wan to face 15+ daily games again. Right now, I am just going to play my stepfather in Daily games. He's rated a couple hundred points lower but is a beginner and a methodical thinker.

Puzzles :: happy A wild week where I was steadily getting my 5 right a day and then had a massive puzzle binge on Friday where I lost 100+ points and then kept going until I got them back. Hoping to cross 2300 by the end of the plan.

Games :: frustrated 7 Rapid games this week, going +4/-3. Another not great week. I just need to persevere as I've been here before. I know I understand the game better than 2+ months ago or even two weeks ago, but my rating has been in the 1275-1300 range for over a month now. It will come, just keep trusting the plan.

Lessons/Endgames :: frustrated Had a busy weekend and didn't get to my Openings study. Will get that in this coming week in addition to the scheduled Lessons time.

As for puzzles, you got the rating back this time but be very careful!! I routinely drop hundreds of points because I'm trying to "get X rating back," don't fall into the same trap... When I was climbing to 2500 puzzles or so just doing a set amount per day helped me the most, binging almost never helps and instead either burns you out or drops your rating. Good luck! You've got more dedication than me to do this for so long wink.png

Avatar of PapaShepherd

@ninjaswat

You are so right. Binging is BAD and almost never works. I was lucky to recover this time. The small number, get 5 right and stop is the best way to stay focused. The first few weeks of this plan I went from 2200 to 1750 cry It has been a slow climb back and Friday was a reminder of what not to do!

Avatar of jdcannon

Agreed; tilt terrible. You totally stop thinking and just do thinks instinctually. Its horrid and no amount of attempted logically thinking will help when you are feeling titled.

Week #11 Tasks & Updates

Daily Games :: happy Averaging 5-10m per day as per the plan.

Puzzles :: happy Continued to do well on puzzles. Was up to almost 2400 at the end of the week (but started off week 12 this morning poorly).

Games :: frustrated All I can say is blah. 6 Rapid games this week, going +1/-5. And some of the worst accuracy I've had in months. I am definitely off my game but not sure why.

Lessons/Endgames :: happy Caught up on openings and had a lesson this week.

Total Time ~10 hours

How has your sleep been? or other life stress? Those things really matter it turns out. It can also just be a bit of luck that you are getting several positions in a row that you don't understand as well as others.

Avatar of PapaShepherd

Not with a Bang, but with a Whimper.

I am going to pull the plug on this final week of my Beginner 2 Plan. I think that is the wisest thing at this point. I've gone complete tilt on Puzzles and even though I am not doing that with my games, I feel like I am beating my head against a wall. I dread playing at this point. Lost 6 in a row and 8 of 10. Just need a break, I believe.

Final Ratings

                               Start        Week 4           Week 8          Week 12           TOTAL        Peak

Chess.com Rapid :: 1122 -> 1211 (+89) -> 1305 (+94) -> 1242 (-63)         +120        1307 (-65)

Chess.com Daily :: 1294 -> 1306 (+12)  -> 1297 (-9)    -> 1296 (-1)             -10         1310 (-14)

Chess.com Puzzles :: 2001 -> 1817 (-184) -> 2202 (+385) -> 2145 (-57)    +144        2393 (-248)

Everything was going great at 8 weeks and started to fall apart in March. No fault of the plan, perhaps just life or fatigue or something else. I am undeniably better at calculation. When not in tilt mode on puzzles, I am capable of solving 2200-2400 difficulty puzzles. I had a mental picture that I would make it to 2400 and when I got to 2393 and missed a few, it all became about getting those points back and BOOM. Here we are.

I think one of the challenges in my games is that because I am better at calculating, I am doing that more, getting into time trouble and making bad moves. Or, even it not in time trouble yet, realizing I spent too long and then making a few quick moves.

I'll be thinking about next steps while taking a break.
