I really enjoyed watching the g6 players get slaughtered.

I don't know how to add comments, but I enjoyed this game.

That was a total kamikaze assault on the king.

The BDG is basically a banzai charge.

What about the Ziegler defense?

I have this sort of plan setting up for g4 and h4. I mapped out an engine-generated line that holds for White. I rarely see this defense played for some reason otherwise I'd have posted more.

GMs seem to rotate through every defense in their neverending search for a refutation. The Vienna seems to be trendy these days, with the argument that after 5.fxe4 Nxe4 6.Qf3 Nxc3 White has no attack and can merely collect the b-pawn as a consolation for having a worse game.

I am quite pleased to see this defense. 5.Bg5!

This transposes to a trap line in the Veresov if they mistakenly play e6? like this fellow. Taking on f3 at this point transitions into my anti-Ziegler line with Bg5, Qe2, and 0-0-0 ideas. If they still refuse to take on f3 we are threatening to chop on f6 and then retake on e4 with tempo.

For further reading here's a world champion losing to the line.

There's more where that came from!

I do think that if chess is ever solved and there is an ultimate refutation found for this gambit it probably lies down the g6 path. However it is not a simple A-B-C refutation.

This fellow published a BDG refutation on the discord I'm on. He lasted 16 moves here. To his credit he crushed me so hard in the long Bogo he's the reason I switched to the Studier Attack months ago. Props to him for being quite well prepared in general, and for annihilating my Portuguese many times.

On another note, I strongly recommend inserting h3 after castling like this. I faced a NM at some point who had the idea of Qd7-> Qg4! playing goalkeeper with the threat of queen trades, which was quite difficult to meet. Confirmed with Leela that this move is necessary.

I think I understand why you don't see the O'Kelly/Ziegler system so much anymore. After doing some deep digging with Leela, I determined White in fact has a good way to recapture the pawn against the O'Kelly defense.

The resulting play is similar to a Caro Kann Fantasy. Bxf7+ ideas are always in the air and often sound depending what Black does.
