Private Chatrooms

The interface for vote chess on this site was designed with archives of discussion of both teams. These archives become accessible for all after the game is finished. It is a very useful chess learning tool to see the thinking of people from both teams.

In the speed vote form of game it as become common, especially by the more organised teams, to use chat rooms to communicate ideas more quickly. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on point of view of course , the chess thinking of teams doing this, gets hidden away.

Propose, to keep the orginal spirit of vote chess, that from next season links to these chatrooms should become publicly accessible to all. After the game has finished of course.

I’m assuming this is in response to the recent game played between Burning Pawns and SuperTroopers.

I agree with your premise.  I always like to see the other team’s discussions on key moves after vote chess games.  From a logistical standpoint, however, I know that the chat site that we use for Burning Pawns SVC matches only stores a set number of lines, and as new discussion goes on, older comments are automatically removed.

Perhaps we could copy the chat discussion to the game discussion archives after each move in order to accomplish this.  I can’t imagine it would be very time-consuming.

Unfortunately, the most common free chatroom software currently being used, http://www.chatzy.com, does not save anywhere close to the entire chat, only the last 50 lines or so.  In order to do what you propose, you would have to dictate a specific free chatroom site that logs all comments be used.  Do you know of such a free chatroom site?  I do not.

So you would have to dictate that specific site be used then, removing the choice of the chatroom site from the participating teams. Do you really want to enforce such a rule?

In order to assure that all groups use the chess.com facility, it would have to be specifically stated in the tournament rules.  The question is then: Is that something the tournament directors want to do?  

Bluebottle: It's too slow.  It doesn't update in real time, so discussion doesn't move as fast or at the same pace for everyone.  It's a lot easier to propose, discuss, and decide on moves when the conversation updates instantly and automatically.

It would have to be agreed upon by the tournament directors, and incorporated into the rules for next season then.

I disagree, the teams that almost never time out, almost always use a chat. It would be impossible to force the teams not to. If there is ANY advantage to anything, for that matter, you're not going to stop a team.

One thing though, is that if a room administrator were to clear the room every turn, the cleared messages ARE accessable through "room history".

Bluebottle, I agree that it would be nice to be able to read logs after a match.  That's why I stand by my suggestion of copy/pasting the discussion from the chat room into the chess.com team comments after each move.

Anything is fair game, as long as it is incorporated into the rules from the beginning of the next season so that it applies to every participant.  It's up to the people who make the rules for these FSVL games whether they want to change the rules or not, and how they would go about it.

What is there to hide in a Speed Vote Chess game? A chat room is absolutely neccessary in a Speed Vote Chess game.

bluebottle: The chess.com comments area is WAY to slow for some teams and they don't always want to refresh. And it would be educational but it would be a huge disadvantage to the team and anyone ON the team would be educated. 2 Day Vote Chess is for discussing in the comments area.

I think that this is for Billium to make a ruling on as he is our tournament organiser, this thread is for exploring possible options for the way season 3 will go ahead.

 Well let's say you on Team A in the chat room and you have a low rating.Your still learning from the masters because they explain why to move the moves and what they are planning.

If you don't have a chat room your at a disadvantage since different teams have different tastes. We could go with relaxion's idea though by posting the chat for that move but that would take a WHOLE bunch of time and the person doing it wouldn't be online the whole time.

Right, as long as it's an established rule at the beginning of  the season.
