Problems with the French Defense

I tried GM Kraai's suggestion for playing against the French Defense, and it went horribly wrong. I resigned after 14 moves because I was down a pawn and had a severe positional disadvantage on top of that. Any comments about what I did wrong and what I should have done instead are appreciated.

Did Jesse recommend 9.Nxd4?  The main gambit line is 9.Nbd2 which was popularised by Melekhina in one of the US Chess Championships.  There are a few videos on that line on chess.com and youtube.

He recommended Nxd4, IIRC. I think until that point I was still OK, it's just that I misplayed everything afterwards.

I think there might be a move order thing going on here and I don't think its covered in the video.  The old way of playing this is the Milner Barry Gambit, which he mentions at the start of the video with 10.Nc3.  10...Qxe5 is a mistake here and white gets open lines against the black King.  Black is supposed to be doing okay though after 10...a6.  I'm normally on the black side of this, but I think 9.Nbd2 is more sound and has similar themes.

The move order wasn't the same, but it looks as though I should have played O-O instead of cxd4 on move 7.

Yeah, I totally messed it up. It's easy for me to mess up openings. It happens too often.

Paul, I think Jesse is recommending 6.Be2 against 5...Bd7.  Otherwise after 6.Bd3 you could wind up in the traditional Milner-Barry Gambit  as in your game.  Or 6.Bd3 cxd4 7.0-0 where Black has the option of avoiding ...Qb6.
