2... Nf6 is much more effective as it develops a piece towards the center and it blocks the checkmate, 3... f6 is leaving many weaknesses in the black camp, and why isn't 4.Bxh6 possible? I think white is fine after 4. Bxh6 Bxh6 5.Nc3
