What is so rubbish about it, exactly?

Like I said in the notes, it ensures scientific integrity and validity of results.

Of course you know, as amateur astronomers, that this isn't always, or perhaps even usually, how scientists work. I do not intend by that to belittle the ideas in the flow chart, just to take exception with the actual flow. So much of science, historically, has begun with observation, driven by no specific ideas.
