OK, a new question, but I am expecting the worse... I am entering a tournament, the theme of which is the Tarrasch defense. Of course, I am not asking you to assist me in the games, but to start a thread about that opening that would help me (and others in the group maybe ?) to prepare for it. The games start on the 2nd of May I think.

Michael-G

In the main line Tarrasch , Black stays with an isolated pawn.

For the other lines "common -sense chess" is enough to give you a good position and you may get hanging pawns too.

The only preparation you need is to study games with Hanging pawns and isolated pawn.So I will open a thread and post some typical games.

Hi Michael, I have started to read your thread carefully. There is a lot there, how can I thank you ?
I have also reread the presentation of the tournament, and this time, I would like to understand fully what some of those terms mean. Can you help me with this ?

# advance 1 ??
Points available 526 ??
And I have never understood what a tiebreak is... ??

How embarrassing ...Cry !!!

==================================================================

Points available  is a chess.com thing I never really understood.Youy suppose to get points according how active you are(post in forums , participating in team matches etc.) but tournament points........I don't know. Maybe they are given according to your placement on the final leaderboard.

Advance has to do with max group size so

Max Group Size:6 ,Advance: 1 , means that you will be 5 or 6 in the group and only the first will qualify for the next round.

Why 5 or 6 and not 6?

Because if the number of the participants is not an exact multiplier of 6 then some groups with 5 will be created.

For example:

With 32 participants there are the following options:

1) 5 groups of 6 and 1 group of 2

2) 4 groups of 6 and 2 groups of 4

3)3 groups of 6 ,2 groups of 5 and 1 group of 4

4)2 groups of 6 and 4 groups of 5

The last option is the most fair as all the participants will play approximately the same games to qualify for the next round

Thank you. I had been lazy. The Help page is well explained :

What are Tournament Points?

Tournament Points are accumulated by competing in Chess.com tournaments. There are four factors we look at that affect how many points a player gets in a tournament:

  • A multiplier based on your final place finish (P)
  • Projected number of rounds (R)
  • Maximum group size (G)
  • Average rating of all the players in the tournament (S)
As for Tie-break points, it is a way of deciding between two equal scores which of the two players is really the better one, quite well explained on that same page.
Michael-G

Yeah , forgot your question anout tie breaks.Sonneborn -Berger and Bucholz are  the usually used tie-break criteria.I don't know what chess.com uses.

Michael-G

Go to your home page , got to groups , to the right you will find "create group".The rest are easy.As name of the group I suggest "Michael the Great"LaughingLaughingLaughing

k so I have two questions, what do you play against the hippo as black and white, and what do you think of Board Visualization exercises? I don't know how much they help (if at all) but I think it would be pretty fun to play against the beginner, without having to look at the board, them just telling you their moves!

Board visualization is a good exercise but not what you need now.

You need to start playing some longer time limit games.Try to play at least 2 half an hour games(for each) every week , then we talk about BV.

Hippo is tricky.Easy to underestimate and for that reason dangerous.Trifunovic's system works well against it  because it is careful and forces the hippo player to make choices.Hippo players usually have poor sense of timing so they usually do wrong central breaks that often lead to unfavorable open or closed positions for them.Avoid closed positions as they are usually what they want , unless they are clearly favorable.

Marcus-101

hmm not sure im going to have time for two half hour games a week.. have got exams coming up soon (3 weeks time).. so with the hippo the knight goes to c3 not d2?

Michael-G

Yes , the knight on c3 with hippo.

Hippo was played twice by Spassky in his world championship against Petrosian and drawed both times. It's not to be underestimated.

Marcus-101

okay :)
