The position the attacking side (the side with the pawn) is trying to reach is the Lucena Position.
The main ideas for defence are:
the Philidor Defence
Passive Defence (used for rook and knight pawns)
Kling & Horwitz Defence (bringing the rook to the rear of the pawn.)
Rook on Longside (King on Shortside) Defence
Puzzles will be used to demonstrate and memorize specific positions where there is only 1 correct move.
For example this position which may arise if the Longside Defence has been made unreachable by the white rook on the a file, so the black rook has come to the rear of the pawn. White threatens to advance the pawn.
This forum will be devoted to the study of the defence of rook v rook + 1 pawn positions.
