Check this out. It is a suggestion to minimize the rating loses for the top player, when he is matched with players much lower rated than himself: Possible solution to "let's get the high-rated guy!"
The best solution IMHO is to avoid matchings like these, by using the rating range at the settings.
Ratings should be hidden during play

yeah the rating range hasnt worked for about a week. I just don'T play ffa anymore, there is no point. playing 1200s is boring and or frustrating

Even hiding the rating isnt a solution to bad play. The solution is to set a rating range that works. Free for all is fun when you play with players who play on your level, wether your are good or bad, Or else the whole psychological aspect of the game is ruined. I like to play with people who understand the purpose of my moves, and who's move have purpose, so I can try to to predict their decisions and they to predict mine. And then it becomes interesting. Anyway, the real game is team play.

@Ne2willdo personally I have never played against a 1200 player after the implementation of the "rating range" setting. In 2-3 cases my preference has been disrespected by about 100 points, and for only one of my opponents. Generally it is working great for me. Here is what I prefer:

well for me I get matched with 11002 and 1200s all the time since the rating ranges have been implemented. Its as if there are none. and I'm not the only one

@Ne2willdo what browser do you use? Have you tried other browsers? I think you should give some info to the developers so they can try to replicate the problem. You could also provide a screenshot like this, to convince them that the problem is real.

I was just thinking the same thing today. And restricting the rating range doesn't really work, because there aren't enough players in the system. When I'm at 1800, and playing against even 3 1600 players, I get ganged on. It's impossible to block out every player below 1700, because there just aren't enough players to even get a game going most of the time. Would be way better if our rank, were not shown. They would have to judge how much of a threat we are based just on our play style, not our rank.

@AnSuckyNoob the reason you are ganged on is partially because currently there are massive rating gains when beating a +200 rated opponent. If the rating system had knowledge about the gang on factor, and minimized the rating gains of beating the top player at specific conditions, the incentive to gang up on the high-rated player would be considerably smaller, and the consequences for him much less severe.
Hiding names and ratings is also a legitimate solution, but removes some thrill from the game.
One defect of the game is the matchmaking. Earlier I a 1750 player at moment was paired against Three 1200 players.
This would not have bothered me except that the other players all ganged up, and you cant really blame them. Why should they bash each other up and leave me to clean up?
The solution would be to hide the rating during play. There is no real need to know the ratings of the other players during the game and it just leads to problems. Maybe this would be a solution
