Hiarcs is a must as far as chess playing software goes, dont pay for any other game playing app! CRC is a chess rating calulator which is easy to use and may come in use (only for your own info) during the tournament. Of course chess.com app too!!

ChessNotePad ($4.99) is a great app for use as an electronic score sheet for tournament play! This app is NOT approved by the USCF. However I have found if you ask, most TD's will allow you to use it as it only does electronic notation. One of the nice features is once the game is over it then creates a PGN file which you can then email to your opponent and TD if need be.
The other app I use hand in hand, is t Chess Pro ($7.99). Once the game is completed in ChessNotePad I then copy and paste the game into t Chess Pro so I can then analyze it with my opponent. Before I used to use a Dell Axim x50v with eNotate which is certified by the USCF then used Pocket Fritz to go over the game. The problem is I don't like having multiple devices at a tournament, it's nice to have the iPod Touch for the size, music, web, games, and other apps in between rounds.

that first one seems very expensive for what it is but is there any cheaper alternative to notation of my game which I can do just by moving the pieces

Expensive? I am guessing you have not done your research on other electronic notation devices or apps. eNotate is $25.00 but you also need a Windows Mobile Device like a Dell Axim x51 which is $88.00 on Amazon, so thats over $100. Short of that the next one I know of is the Monroi which is whopping $395.00. I guess if you are just doing notation for personal use and you don't need a PGN file you can download Evernote for your specific iDevice. Then just write down your moves like 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3....and so on.

The comments on the app state you can not notate with this app. Right now the best option would be ChessNotePad it's 4.99 but it's worth the money if notation is what you want. I have been working on developing my own notation software for the iphone/ipod touch but thats not a sollution for anyone at this point nor anytime soon.

Chess Score-Sheet and eNotate for the Apple/iPad environment both appear to be acceptable for tournament use, as does yChess for Android. But, as far as I can tell, ChessScribe for Apple and mChessPad for Android both correct illegal moves, so they provide assistance to the tournament player in a way that USCF and FIDE rules prohibit.

I am the developer of Chess Score Pad - Electronic Chess Scoresheet for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. You should consider this for tounaments.
It is much easier and more accurate to enter you moves using a graphical interface than writing the coordinates. After the game you can email the pgn file to your desktop to automatically load into a chess engine for analysis.

I will be going to a tournament in a couple of months and on my iPod I would like to share a folder that I have called "Chess Apps". Most of these are free and I would also like to see your feedback on them and if you know any good free apps that help in chess.
those are the 8 that I have found, and the chess.com app of course do you know any good free chess app's that can help you prepare for a tournament.
(I have seen Fritz but in fear of my account being closed I am not going to down load it)
