Week-1 Update:

Daily - 1429 (+1): I had completed 9 daily games during the period and had lost just 1 game but because of that loss I lost 19 rating points. Takeaway: Play the Tartakower Variation in the Caro-Kann instead of Bronstein-Larsen Variation, its just too complicated at my level.

Puzzles - 1774 (+55): Takeaway: Do not move until sure of the solution. Calculate all possible variations.  Checks, Captures, Threats..

Rapid - 1126 (+47): Scored 7/10, Lost 3 games as white, in 2 games I had winning positions from the opening but lost my focus in the middlegame and in 1 game I did not play the opening (Pirc Defense) very well. Did not loose a single game as black thanks to the Caro-Kann Defense. Takeaways: Ensure that their is no disturbance during chess game to avoid any distractions and lack of focus.

Blitz - 625(-): I haven't played Blitz ever. Week-2 is all Blitz, let's see what happens.

Week 2 Update:

Daily - 1433 (+4): It is very difficult to gain rating in Daily games. First of all they take too long to finish and when they do finish the rating gain is very small. I do not think I will be able to achieve my Daily rating goal at my current pace.

Puzzles - 1968 (+194): Played a lot of puzzles and tried to calculate thoroughly before moving.

Rapid - 1125 (-1)

Blitz - 683 (+58): I have got mixed feelings about Blitz. It is very difficult to calculate and make plans in the middle game due to shortage of time. I also think that it is very addictive and I enjoyed playing Blitz a lot. After finishing a game there is this instant urge to start another blitz game. The chances of making a mistake is very high but when a person finds great moves despite shortage of time then it is quite exhilarating. I am proud of the two brilliant moves that I found during my blitz games.

Takeaway: Usually I play the King's Gambit as white but during blitz games I did not get good results (35.7% win rate) as it was difficult to calculate deeply. I think I would have to switch to the Italian for better results. So far having good results as black playing Caro-Kann on e4 and Dutch Defense on d4. Have to keep an eye on the clock as sometimes I just calculate for too long (and still play the bad move happy.png)

I am looking forward to the impact on my Rapid gameplay after playing blitz for a week.

I feel you on the blitz; I personally have cut it entirely from my training plan. Matt and I disagree about its usefulness for training. But we certainly agree its a fun way to play chess.

Nice work!

I agree on daily games. My first program, I played A LOT of daily games. I played in multiple tournaments and gained a few hundred points but it was pretty brutal to play so many. I think for purposes of the CG plans, the Daily games are there solely for trying to be as accurate as possible in an actual game (i.e. not a puzzle) but that you aren't likely going to gain much in the way of points.

Also agree on blitz. I started with a coach a few months ago and he told me to stop playing blitz. I played a few games in December but hadn't touched it since. However, this past week I was feeling overloaded from so much calculation in my rapid games and decided what the heck, play some blitz. It was so much fun. I gained 100 points in 4 days (granted I started at 690!) and I felt energized. Looking forward to going back to Rapid this week, but I my start working some blitz games in just to 'play'.

Good luck back in the slightly slower world of chess this week. happy.png

Yeah, I think daily can be powerful learning too. Especially if you use it as a chance to calculate deeply without time pressure. Then check your lines with the daily analysis. (not an engine)

I think since opening explorers are okay to use for daily, practicing realistic openings you will get over the board is not that common.

Personally, I don't really enjoy daily that much so don't play it often.

Week 3 Update:

Daily - 1440 (+7): Finished 2 daily games and won both of them. Both of my opponents were lower rated than me, I got the advantage and won smoothly. My ongoing opponents are also lower rated than me. I have got to get games with higher rated players in future.

Puzzles - 1965 (-3): The puzzles have gotten harder, have to do better.

Rapid - 1182 (+57): Game Score: +25/-19 I played a lot of rapid games and did manage to win most of them. The downside to playing many games was that I could not concentrate on analyzing my games (that needs to change). After playing blitz last week, I had to deliberately slow down and think before moving my pieces.

Blitz - 653 (-30): Yeah! I couldn't resist playing some blitz games.

Wow! That is a ton of rapid games! Especially if you are using your time in them and seems like its really paying off!

Avatar of PapaShepherd

Nice progress on the Rapid games! I think my brain would melt if I played that many.

Blitz is hard to resist happy.png I'm not convinced it's good for me but I do enjoy it.

I had some rematches with the same opponents.. People usually repeat the same openings therefore the structures and plans are similar so I had to learn from my previous games and not repeat the same mistakes again.... It was a continuous learning experience which I enjoyed a lot...

I will try to have rematches during the blitz week as well to reinforce similar concepts...

Avatar of jdcannon

similar so I had to learn from my previous games and not repeat the same mistakes again.

I wish I never repeated my mistakes.
