I don't know the answer, so I feel free to guess. The goddess of chess is Aphres, a cruel alien combination made by cutting pieces of Aphrodite (ancient greek goddess of beauty) and sticking them together with pieces of Ares (her lover and fellow ancient greek god of war). The result is a goddess of amazing beauty, who turns fighting into an art, and who frustrates poor mortals (like me) with complexities that go beyond their capability to understand :-)
