i think that God doesn't care what day you rest, as long as you take a break from your labor and rest, especially in Him, if possible. and if you end up having a seven day week every now and again, i don't think He'll gig you.
Sabbath or Lords day?
In ancient Israel they the sabbath was Saturday, and since the start of the new covenant the church has met on Sunday. I think that right there is a big argument for why they are different. Though our lods day doesn't have the same rules as their sabbath. And I think we are still free to work.
Is Sunday (the Lords day) the sabbath?
I think not.
I find that a lot of Christians believe that Sunday is the sabbath and as such it is unlawful to do business or any kind of work. I disagree. I believe that the sabbath was fulfilled with the rest of the old covenant and that our modern Lords day is not the same thing. If anyone here disagrees with me on this i would like to hear why. I have yet to find a good reason why this doctrine is so widespread.
Which old covenant? The one with Moses? It is true, the Sabbath wasn’t recorded as being instituted under the law until the Mosaic covenant, and many of the Mosaic laws have been fulfilled by Christ’s death and resurrection. But you must remember two things. The Sabbath is much much older than Moses: God rested on the Sabbath during the creation of the world: He took the Sabbath off to enjoy His creation, so we should take the Sabbath off to enjoy Him. Secondly, there is a difference between the moral law and the fulfilled civil and sacrificial laws: the moral law still applies to us today, and the others do not. Interestingly, the command to keep the Sabbath is listed alongside the moral law in the Ten Commandments. It seems like a stretch to say that nine out of ten are still in full effect, but the other is not.
I’m not a Seventh Day Adventist though: I believe the focus switched from Saturday to Sunday because of the resurrection of Jesus. Here’s a video I recommend:
In answer to your first point: God rested on the seventh day of the week (Saturday) which was then made into the sabbath under the mosaic covenant. Jesus rose on the first day of the week (Sunday) which was then made into the Lords day under the new covenant. But they are not the same thing.
On your second point: one thing that I have never understood is that the ten commandments were the very core of the mosaic law, the heart and soul if you will. So how can we say that the mosaic law is fulfilled and no more and yet continue to cling on to the most signifying piece of it?
The Bible also never makes a distinction between the moral, civil, or sacrificial laws of the mosaic covenant. For the ancient jew they were all just laws, all had to be followed, and all where important.
Also, you said that " it seems like a stretch to say that nine out of ten are still in full effect, but the other is not." I disagree. The ten commandments where fulfilled with the rest of the old covenant laws. And there is nothing strange that the new covenant has several of the same laws, like nine of the ten commandments.
On a side note. Am i the only one who has been typing an answer and then have it mess up and get deleted? Its happened several times on here and its very frustrating.
