SCID is great, but...

I think we should support great free software like SCID.  ChessBase Light really suppresses the popularity of SCID, I think, but SCID is better than CBL.

I've programmed in TCL and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about extending SCID.

I do agree that a lot of things in SCID are counterintuitive and perhaps we could come up with some cheat sheets and tutorials, perhaps with a direction to modifications of SCID to make common operations easier.

I'd like to see the PGN features improved as I find this the most widely used and flexible import/export format.

There is a lot of development of Scid, but I'm not that sure of the current status.

Originally Scid was made by Shane Hudson, but he disappeared about five years ago. Some say he was seriously ill, some say they've heard of him later but he was very busy. He never responds to anything anymore, even people sending him donation money. Looks like he's gone for good.

Since then a few people have started competing versions of Scid, blaming each other for foul play, going inactive again, apparently the one at scid.sf.net now is the only active one.

I'd inform there to see what's happening with new development now.

I love SCID!!! Much more so than ChessBase. I don't use it as an analysis device but just to store and review databases. If I buy a chess book then I download all the games into a dbase and use SCID to walk through the games while reading along in the book. It's a great tool.

Maybe I am missing something???   I have CB Light which is good with one exception you can't save anyhing in CB Light.  You can open CB Databases which comes in handy, the Fritz6 & crafty engine are nice.  I belive you can save the Repertior but I haven't tried.

CB Light is geared to sell the full verision.
