randomando, I had a look at your game and although I'm far from the best player here I thought I'd make a comment (other people can still add stuff though). The game you played looked pretty good to me, but I think you could probably try to conserve your pieces a bit more. At move 11 (ng4) you sacrificed your knight for no gain, and Ik it can be tempting to do that but it probably would have been valuable to manipulate his pawns with and was under no threat so you probably should have kept it.

More prominent than that, you sacrificed your king which is generally considered to be the best piece on move 14 and again got no real gain from that (you could have moved it back one space to avoid having to take his pawn). I think sacrificing your king there put you at a noticeable strategic disadvantage as the board you had left after that point was very hemmed in, so he could control most of the space quite easily.

Sacrificing your pieces when you can is the default intuition for many in giveaway given the nature of the game, but its valuable to avoid this so that you can have more options and control the space on the board (ofc its important to know when it can be useful to sacrifice as well and apart from those two, all your sacrifices seem reasonable).

Apart from that the game looks pretty good though.

Oh, sorry rando but I actually realised just now that your opponent missed mate on move 19 when they captured the d pawn. If they captured the a pawn instead, you would have had two options.

a. Take their c pawn with your rook. If you do this, he can capture rook with king, then you are forced to capture the queen with your other rook. Then he can move the rook on the a file away, and it seems like a pretty easy mate from there.

B. Take his queen with your rook on a file. This probably doesn't need any extra explanation as you have two rooks with forced captures while he has no forced captures and he can use his turn to undefend a piece.

For your loss ashton, tbh I thought that up to the point where you miscalculated the promotion there was nothing I could recommend to improve, and that mistake was a pretty simple calculation error. If I were to make a comment, I'd just point out that given that you had so much time left it would have been good to run through all the promotions in your head thoroughly to make sure (at least the one you were actually going to go for). But it's possible you did this anyway and just messed it up.

Same for the win, I couldn't really think of anything.

Maybe someone better than me can provide greater insight.

thanks for the tips Envoy, appreciate it.

I see where conserving pieces would have helped. happy.png

Thanks for taking a look Envoy happy.png

For Rando's game I agree with Envoy with regard to the king sacrifice, I'd have definitely kept that piece.

recent loss: totally thought i had it at the end...

im guessing i shouldnt have rushed to give away my king at the end

Avatar of EnvoyofChaos

Yep, definitely agree that it would have been useful to keep your king. Given the pawn's restrictive range of moves (you only really have one option) they are very easy to manipulate and predict so being left with only a single pawn can make it very easy for your opponent to set up a board where no matter what you promote to, your options are bad/ lost. You would have been in a much better position had you kept the king (its good you realised this though).

Also could I ask what the rationale behind F3 on move 4 was?

Avatar of randomando9000

oh yea, f3 move 4 was just a random move so i can take is rook with my rook next move.

interested to see what people think of this game: https://www.chess.com/variants/giveaway/game/28133756/0/1

(and in tips for winning queen races generally)

i kept the race going initially since i had 1 less piece in material. i stopped it with 12. Rxa2 since i saw i could get rid of all involved pieces safely and potentially worsen black's pawn structure. seeing that i could threaten revealed attacks for the bishop & rook with 15. Nh3 was a nice and unexpected bonus

here's another queen race: https://www.chess.com/variants/giveaway/game/28134221/1/1

here i was preparing Qxe6 as an option for getting out of the race, but noticed 14. Rxa7 was mate so changed my plan

I would reply Rando but firebatprime has actually released two very informative videos in much more detail and with greater expertise than I could about the exact line u played.

The first video explains the fundamentals and many variations of the line/ defense u played and the weaknesses as well as why its allure can be a trap (its name; the Suicide Defense should give you an indication of its strength at higher levels):

And the second video goes into depth about the exact line you played and how it can put you into a difficult position.

oh awesome, so that's the Suicide Defense i've read about lol...

I'll take a look at the vids, thanks Envoy
