Shatranj rating lists

Hi,

As the Shatranj top lists only contain players that have played the last two weeks, and I have been told that Shatranj was implemented on Chess.com already back in 2018, I thought it would bee interesting to collect information about the highest ranked players.

In the following Excel link:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15-7Zdo-AHm36zCq-LAeQ8WVSed9UGJse/edit?gid=1292100573#gid=1292100573

I am happy to present 3 Shatranj rating lists. The first Best list shows all Shatranj players I have found that have made 1900+ rating at some point, either in blitz or rapid (dark-green). The second list shows the 100 current highest rated players by 2. January 2025. The closed accounts are excluded, and only blitz ratings are included here. The last list is a country list where the mean of five highest ranked players is calculated. As this list is the last I have worked with it has huge potential of improvement. In order to get started many of the lowest ranked countries are supported by artificial agents with low ratings.

Digging into old games and players on Chess.com is almost as hard as looking into the beginning of Universe. The archive supports only your last 40 games, and only your last 40 games against each player in two-player seek. The oldest games I have found are from late 2020. So if you know of players missing in my lists – let me know! I hope of publishing this list in future every year in January.

I have also done some correlation analysis (Pearson) between Shatranj ratings and (western) chess ratings, and between Shatranj ratings and amount of Shatranj games played. This can of course be done in several ways (live ratings, best ratings, blitz games only, total amount of Shatranj games) but for both measures the correlation is around 0,45-0,50. One important thing to remember here however is the fact that in Shatranj everyone starts on 1500 rating, and as there are few players compared to western chess, getting your correct shatranj rating might in did in some cases take hundreds of games.

Ah wow cool, thanks...

I was over 1900 in rapid a couple of times, so I hope my name shows there!!

coolthing

The spreadsheet appears to be private

Rungne

Sorry and thanks Coolthing. Now the link should be open to anyone. Let me know if there still are some technical problems.

Yes you are Samuele. I found your best to be rapid 1916, which includes you in the list containing currently of 126 players.

I hope my Norway can improve the 16th place in future, but at least we are tons of rating points ahead of Sweden 😉

is chaturji included in this?

Rungne

No it is only Chaturanga. A name that is quite misleading because the name of the variant should really be either the Persian Chatrang or the Arabic Shatranj.

Chatrang/Shatranj have the most ancient rules we know off, and only in the 9th century we get the first (Arabic) descriptions of Indian game.

It is also uncertain if the Indian game was the first, in fact the oldest secure chess texts and pieces are by far the Persian. Still it was important for British historians like Murray (1913) and earlier to prove that chess originated from British India.

Wow that's amazing, me too I had some problem to access but I was shy to say it.

Now I'm exploring it! Thanks Rungne!

I just want to repeat the link here, because the link in Rungne's post was not clickable:

Great work on the list!

samuelebeckis

@Rungne .. Oh yess, the Team tab, I saw it later!

The agent addition seems fair. But how do you calculate a country score, exactly?

Rungne

The country score is just the mean of the five current highest ranked blitz players, excluding closed accounts.

Total US domination and people are speaking about making America great again. No need for that – US is already great 😉

It's true! If there weren't so many talented players in the United States, there wouldn't be any talk of Shatranj renaissance today.

Let's say "Thanks America!" for once, and congrats to all top players in general! Not just the United States, but the entire America as a continent, from Canada to Tierra del Fuego in the South, is actually involved in the Shatranj renaissance.

One day, joking with a friend of mine, trying to describe the ranking with a metaphor I told him: "Riccuadra is the Aconcagua of Shatranj, while Coolthing is the Sky!". Just a joke..

However, even Vietnam surprised me, maybe Vietnamese people are getting tired of playing Cờ Tướng, and are looking for something new. New and ancient at the same time.

Unfortunately almost no one in the Middle East and Central Asia, it's a pity. They have been playing for more than a thousand years, and now they don't want to play anymore!!

There will be a February update perhaps, Rungne?

Rungne

In did I thought of a January 2025 list update. Thanks to the rating list links you sent me I found 5 new 1900+ players. Also some new countries are now included. Still I want to make some more work on the 2020-2021 period so I can add more players to the Countries stats. When that's done I will send an updated link.

It is a bit frustrating that the oldest games I have found are from September 2020 when Riccuadra told me that the game was implemented in 2018.

And as mentioned before new rating list I think could come every year.

Also – has there lately been a little rating deflation in the system? I feel all top players where higher rated in the 2021-2022 period?

Rungne

Hi again,

So here is a Shatranj rating list update:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HT6bzDwKXdAqI16exXFxntmADbfHX96T/edit?gid=194118316#gid=194118316

The ratings are still anno 01. January 2025, but there are some more players, and especially the country ratings chart is improved, so there are now 50 countries, including Vatican states that with a population of 764 people still make 29th place on the list 😊

Also all players over 1800+ are included in the country columns, so you can for example see all 50 US players that have made 1800+ at some point, plus some others.

It seems that what I have heard earlier about Chess.com starting with Shatranj in 2018 seems wrong. and that Shatranj got implemented around Summer 2020. Hence my best list with 132 players that have been over 1900 might be not far from completed?!
