They're possible but they don't really follow chess physics. 

six player chess has teams

not physics, but geometry

Hbout a 16 by 8 board and 2 people on each side

or...

12 player chess would be.....in the center

It appears that center part has you align right with the board above.

so the pawns could move three times to get to the other side basically, erm

That six player chess is possible but not everybody would be set up the same
