Spell Chess Opening Explorer

I have created an opening explorer / database for Spell Chess at spellchess.win. It shows stats on game results from each move that has been played in a position. Filter by rating or player to explore top theory!

If you've used opening explorers for regular chess, hopefully the interface is intuitive. Otherwise, scroll down below the board interface for details.

After you finish playing a game on chess.com, you can import the PGN4 machine-readable notation into the explorer with the Load PGN4 button. This is useful to find where the game exited common theory. (For the curious, PGN4s being publicly available via players' archives is how I got the data.)

Currently the database includes almost all games by 2000+ rated players through the month of August. Other players may have games in the database depending on how often they play high-rated players. Hyperbullet and 1+0 time controls are always excluded. I'll probably load new games every month or two.

Let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy!

This is very impressive! Is there a way (or future plan) for us to access the raw database?

Thank you!

I would be happy to share the raw database of PGN4s. The only trouble is that it's quite large, over a gigabyte even compressed, and Cloudflare would not be happy about me serving the file to the public through their CDN. I'd appreciate it if anyone who wants the data could set up something like an FTP server I can write to. Or if you're just interested in a smaller subset of the data like games between 2000+ players, I can host that for a while, no problem.

Hi, I noticed that half of the moves aren’t readable when using dark mode. Are you able to fix that?

Avatar of Fleex255

Oops, I forgot the stylesheets had a dark mode, and so didn't finish implementing it! This is fixed now. Thanks for the report.

@Fleex255 Are you able to add using arrow keys to go through moves? Because the only way to go through moves is to click on the move (correct me if I'm wrong).

Avatar of Fleex255

Good idea, thanks for the suggestion. I have just added support for Left/Right to step through moves and Delete to erase the current move.

can you add puzzles to your website. I can help you create some that you can put on if you want

Avatar of Delhy

that would be interesting we could use the puzzles that i and howmanycharactersamiallow have already done and create new ones...

I would love for there to be puzzles training for spell chess. However, this would need quite a bit of new development work to create. To be useful across time and rating levels, I think it would also need a lot of puzzles in the library - hundreds at the very least. For that, I would want an automated selection and verification process.

I am slowly making some progress toward something that would help me build this. I can't give any guarantees about when or if a puzzles feature will actually happen, though.

creating 100 of problems is hard though chess.com sometimes do 50 puzzles quasi the same and say they are different, so we should be able to do the same...

Avatar of PGT5665

yeah I understand, but I can make 100 puzzles if you want some help?

bro I dropped from 2000 to 1900 due to lag(I'm kinda mid)

this is one example of a puzzle that I encountered in my games. Keep in mind, the moves went,

e4, c6, Qh5, Rjumpxh5, Rjumpxh5

@Fleex255 This is what the website looks like when viewing it from a small screen. Are you able to fix that?

I've just added some alternate layout rules for tall screens. However, the site is really only designed for regular desktop/laptop screens. If you're using a phone, I suggest you turn it sideways.
