Tablut (and 'Shogi' Tablut)

I'm recently experiencing the game of Tablut and I have to say it is funny to play and deep! Even if all pieces move the same way the game is complex and requires a mental thinking similar to that of Chess.

If you know nothing about Tablut I will just tell you it's a Scandinavian game of the Tafl family, or in other words it's a variant of Hnefatafl, sometimes called Viking Chess.

There is only one King on the board and the goal of the game is different for the 2 players: one has to rescue the King, the other has to capture the King. Simple rules a bit different from one variant to the other ensure the balance in the game.

Tablut is played on a 9x9 board, and so it's smaller than other variants, but not the smallest one! Compared to other tafl games, I'd say it is more 'crucial': it's easy for the Muscovites to eat the King -- normal capture with only 2 men -- however it's also easy for the Swedish to save the King -- every edge squares is winning, no need to reach a corner. So the balance is delicate and one mistake can easily cost the game to either side.

You can find the full rules on Wikipedia. The article mention 2 different rule interpretations about the King re-entering the throne (the central square) and the other pieces moving through that special square. I can say I played Tablut at the World Tafl Federetion website and both kinds of moves are normally allowed.

If you own a Shogi set then you already have all you need to play Tablut: a 9x9 board with 1 General and 8 unpromoted pieces, challenging 16 Tokins. Just remember that in Tablut you cannot re-drop on the board the captured pieces!! ^_^

Very nice setup. I think this is how Tablut will be played in Japan when the game becomes more popular. wink
However, on your picture the throne is not visible. Actually the king is starting the game from the central square which is his throne. The throne is hostile to every piece except the king. So, when a piece is sandwiched between an enemy piece and the throne, the piece is killed and removed from the board. On the other hand, the throne is protective to the king because next to the throne the king must be surrounded from three sides in order to be captured. When the king is on his throne, the Muscovites (or the attackers) need to surround him from all four sides to capture him.
Without the throne, the game variant is called Simple Tafl 9x9 and the king can be captured by only two of the Muscovites everywhere on the board.
Additionally, I want to mention that the Muscovites usually start the game. However, in the World Tafl Federation we played thousands of Tablut games and found out that when the Swedish move first, the game becomes more interesting and well-balanced.

Ah nice, thank you Plamen for all the details. happy thumbup

Well, actually I should have suggested to mark the central square with an X or something. But I know for someone Shogi is a sort of religion, so I'm not sure a Shogi board can be desecrated like that!! However that image I posted was intended from me with a non-marked throne in the centre.

Probably the best option is to buy a real Tablut board. wink.png

When I play Plamen I lose, but at the my first (long-term) game against someone other I destroyed him in 11 plies (half moves), let's say in 6 moves, using the Chess dialect. Sacrifice and win, wow! happy.png trophies

My opponent resigned because it is like a mate-in-1 situation: my King has 2 ways to reach the edge and win, Black cannot prevent both moves... He made a blunder, I think I will give him a rematch with reversed colours.

Congratlations, Samuel, on your first Tablut win against an experienced opponent. Your opponent is not amongst the strongest but he has more than 100 Tablut games of experience and some wins over high rated players. So, your opponent was not a joke. However, you made some mistakes in the game. For example, you moved twice with the same piece in the opening. In tafl, the same like in chess, it is good to move different pieces in the openings.
Anyway, good job and keep improving! It will be interesting to see how your opponent will play in the rematch.

Thanks for your precious advices Plamen, I'm actually rematching that guy. The way he fell in my easy trap tells me he is not so strong, but let see how it goes now...I'd say there is no quick win for Black, unless White blunders the King in a few moves, which I don't expect to happen.

@Plamen_Draganov I wish you a great performance in the 2022 World Championship, good luck! wink.png

Forgot to mention ... I'm late, but

Congrats Plamen for confirming your World title! trophies

Actually, I lost my title. Casshern (Mario Aluizo) who is the greatest tafl player of all time, managed to win the weak king tournament (Tablut and Welsh Tawlbwrdd variants) and he is also about to win the strong king tournament (Copenhagen variant) and probably the Sea Battle tournament as well. So, he will be the winner in 3 different tafl variants. He is a true champion and it makes my victory over him in the last year even more impressive. I hope to come back stronger next year.
However, this year I won the fourth tournament organized by the World Tafl Federation, which was a Race game tournament, including the traditional Saami game of Sahkku and the race game of the vikings called Daldøs. So, I am not with empty hands after the world championship.
