Telekinesis

Do you guys think telekinesis exists or doesn't?

pawn_slayer666

What is your definition of telekinesis?  Its been shown that brain waves can be harnessed to allow paralyzed people to type stuff.  So brain waves can exist outside of the body.

But if you mean ability to move mountains and other unmoveable things, no.  Unless you're a believer in noetic sciences...

KairavJoshi

telekinesis such as telepathy, moving a pencil with mental power, psi balls..., levitating a pencil..... etc

asampedas

You don't need mental power to move a pencil.

You just have to use an invisible string (those used by magicians), put up a magnificent act, use hand gestures to 'cast magic spells' and move the pencil as you're gesturing!

Anyway, what are psi balls?

grandmaster56

well so far there is no proof as far as I know that there is a way to transfer your brain waves to an object, much less using them to lift up an object. So, no I don't believe in telekinesis.

strangequark

I'm a strong agnostic when it comes to telekinesis. The burden of proof is not on me!

KairavJoshi

Yea... cool concept... it would be cool if that was possible... hmm but what about all of those psychics that claim they can do it? Are they all lyiing?

strangequark

Almost certainly yes.

See, for example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxSNuIx4m5k

pangalacticgogoblast

Indeed i'm quite proud to say that just yesterday i levelled up and now i can lift something as big and as heavy as a car 3 times a day...

wait, seriously, wasn't this a forum about things like science?

Elroch

But how about telepathy?

asampedas

Twins may have telepathy, as there is this 'concept', whether true or not, that when one is in some sort of difficulty, the other can feel it. I don't know myself if it is true.

But if you mean telepathy as in reading other people's mind, then I'm sorry. That's just not true.

KairavJoshi

pang, this group is about science/math.

All this stuff like telepathy, kinesis etc is science related since it is about brain waves traveling or something. Their existance would change the way scientists view the universe. Though 99%, all this stuff doesn't exist. I'd like to meet someone who claims to be psychic so they can try to prove it to me :)

Elroch

There is statistical evidence for telepathy from Ganzfeld experiments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganzfeld_experiment ) , but it is a point of contention whether this is due to fraud or errors. There is an interesting variation where one subject visits a random location while the other remains in sensory deprivation and describes what she sees. I found the descriptions to be striking in  some cases, but this is only anecdotal evidence.

I'd like to believe it is possible to transmit/receive pictures people draw. I am not sure how this can be done as a trick without collusion, but can all the people who have done it be psychics? Smile

Well I agree with Grandmaster.

How about this spoonbender:

pawn_slayer666

My opinion of spoon bending is that when you concentrate on the spoon, you pass your body heat to it.  As the spoon heats up, it becomes more volatile and easier to bend.

It could also be that those kinds of metal spoons are very easy to bend.  I was eating ice cream and used one of those kinds of spoons to take it out.  The ice cream was able to bend the spoon.

There are probably other explanations for it, but those two are my top 2 explanations for spoon bending.

As far as I know, brain "waves" have never been detected outside the skull.  The way the brain interface works for people with severe disabilities is that a set of sensors detect changes in brain activity in different areas, mostly the visual cortex.

tele-anything is bunk.

Math_magician

The Amazing Randi, a profesional magician, investigates psychic claims, and

He has put out a one million dollar reward for anyone who can demonstrate true psychic powers (i.e. - not something you can do with magic tricks) that has gone unclaimed for a long time.

BTW, the spoon trick is a well-known one in magic circles...

Elroch

I agree with carterbig. Television is a myth.

More seriously, I am sure that most claims of psychic ability are fraudulent, but Randi is not an independent judge and will always ensure a negative result (of which he is the sole judge).

Let's take a vote: if you believe in tekekinesis, raise my hand.
