Teleport Ideas

I think that when creating custom positions it should be possible to place teleports on the board and connect the teleports.  I think being able to land on a square with a teleport should not be required for a piece to pass through a teleport.  I'm thinking that some effects that teleports could have would be

1. Effective lateral connections between two squares so that it is as if one teleport is one square in front, behind or to the side of another teleport.

For instance in this example if the two grey rooks represent two connected teleports, and the teleport on f11 is treated as being one square in front of the teleport on j6 the red knight could move to any square occupied by a dead knight.  In this case the knight could teleport when passing through the square occupied by the teleport but it wouldn't be required to.  So it would be as if there are two squares in front of j6.

2. Effective diagonal connections between two teleports

For instance if the grey bishops represent two teleports that are connected and the teleport on h6 is treated as being 1 square behind and one square to the right of the teleport on i9 then the dead alfil-riders represent all but one of the squares the blue alfil-rider could move to, with the blue alfil rider also able to land on the teleport on h6.  In this case the alfil rider could move to twice the number of squares it normally could implying that teleports on opposite colors may increase the values of normally color bound pieces.

3. Effective rotations

For instance if the grey walls represent two connected teleports then the grey bishops would represent every square the green bishop could land on except for the squares the teleports would be on.  In this case passing through the teleport would divert the bishops movement 90 degrees clockwise.

or in this example if the clear walls represent connected teleports and the grey camels represent squares the yellow camel could move to then passing through the teleport would reverse the camels direction.

I think it should also be possible to connect a teleport to multiple other teleports, at least if the ways it connects to each other teleport is different.

I actually have created a whole set based on this concept. I've included ten "portals" (some of them aren't really portals) for each color. They include:

  • Portals that only the player with that color can access (i.e., only white can access white portals)
  • Portals that all players can access, which are indicated by a little dot on them, but to access them a player must go through their own color portal which also must have a dot on it (i.e., red can go through a red portal with a dot on it and come out of a green portal with a dot on it, but not the other way around)
  • Land mines that, when placed on a square, can no longer be stepped on safely and thus basically removing that square from the board (could be replaced with walls ig)
  • Direction "portals", that point in the four orthogonal directions and can affect piece movement (for example, a bishop can travel horizontally if it moves onto the direction portal and continues moving)
  • Angled "portals", basically an extension to direction portals, where pieces can move in different directions based on the angle shown on the portal

So yes, this is definitely a cool idea, however, I feel as if more crazy inventions would turn 4pc from a chess game to a video game. We probably need a limit as to how much this game changes.

Well it would make board configurations that would otherwise be impossible possible.  For instance in this position

could be equivalent to this position

with the right connections between teleports, and custom pawn directions and a few adjustments to catling.

or alternatively we could have things like cylindrical chess, in which teleports are used to connect opposite edges of of the board.

again, the problem is with too many new game rules and ideas added, 4pc will turn from being a chess game with two extra players to a full-on video game played on your browser

yeah
