The Dangers of Poor Development

Here is a game from a recent Team Match where my opponent did not develop his pieces well, and he was punished.

Nice.

I believe the reason behind black move no. 6. was

  1. He don't want to take the Knight as your Queen would be threatening his rook & he does not want to do f5 or Rg8 as he wants to castle.
  2. Can't move his Knight to e5 as f4 would force him to be back to square 1.  Its the same case with Na6 or Nb4
  3.  The reason he moved his knight was because he did not want double pawn (NxN NxN, BxN bxB) & then you can also attack his rook via Qd4 (reason applies again here)
That's just my opinion.  Looks like i have too much time today. :)

Doubled pawns are not always bad.  If I traded like that, I would have helped him catch up on development and he would have the Bishop pair.  We would be about equal.

To be honest I was expecting your first move 1.Nf3 or Nc3 because of our team name The Dark Knights: but I glad we can play regular openings like Ruy Lopez. I am surprise a 1853 play so poor and especially on move six knight to b8, no 1800 otb will do that. Congratulation on well conducted attack and I sure your oppnent will not undevelop his pieces again.Black needed to develop his black bishop to g7 and white move 7.Nde2 should hold a tiny advantage. A possible moves could be 7...0-0  8.Bg5 d6 (8..f6?! 9.Bh4 and black is weak on the white squares) 9.Qd2 Be6 10.0-0-0 and holds a tiny advantage.
