The Euthyphro Problem

Where does morality come from? If your answer is "from God", I now present you the Euthyphro Problem, originally created by Plato in his dialogue called Euthyphro.

Are right actions right because God commands them, or are right actions commanded by God because they are right?

If the first, you have to accept morality by authority, so if God came down and reversed the 10  commandments, say, they would still be moral. In which case, goodness has no real meaning anymore. God commands what is good becomes God commands what he commands.

If the second, there appears to be a higher power that even God is regulated by, which defies the idea of his omnipotence. And then, what created these moral values? Why would we get them via God instead of straight from the source.

What do you think?

The second makes more sense, because it it does not mean that there is a higher power than God, just like 2+2=4 no matter what an all powerful God does.

God is goodness, and He cannot contradict or redefine His own nature. To say that God cannot do self-contradictory things is not to say that He is not omnipotent (“haha can God make a rock He can’t lift?”)

I would agree with the first option, God defines goodness and could theoretically have created another universe (or an infinite number of more universes ) where moral standards are different, just like he could make one where the laws of nature are different. But as far as we go, God is also immutable, which means he does not change. So no, he could not come and change our moral laws because tjat would be God changing, it would also be God contradicting himself which would alo make him a lier.

correct. i don't believe there is any more to say on the matter, since what i would say about the first perspective has already been shared by multiple people.

from my understanding, morality comes form consiousness ( our ability to discern good from bad in this context ). which is modernly hypothesised to originate from the quantum nature of consiousness in our universe, and yeah the first one doesnt seem like a bad thing when we speak about God being the ultimate creator, he wouldnt change the nature of morality as its a fundamental tool bound by the rules of creating anything, who created this rule = God himself, so i guess i believe in both... Ah shoot I've confused myself again.
