On the 1st of July 1997, the British left Hong Kong after a 156 year rule. This occupation began during the first Opium War (war between the Qing Dynasty, now China, and Britain). They first took Hong Kong island (where I'm from) and it was established as a Crown Colony (British colony) in 1843. They then annexed the Kowloon Penninsula after the Second Opium War.
During the Second World War, the Japanese annexing lands all over east Asia, including China. They did annex Hong Kong too, so we were a Japanese colony for 4 years too.
Finally, on the 1st of July 1997, they left our country and gave Hong Kong back to China
