The Proposal of Making More Even Matches More Effectively.

Certainly can't hurt to give this a try. May lead to more opportunities to play. May also lessen ratings 'mismatches.'

A big thanks to Lauri for his work in setting it up. I guess my big concern now is that I feel distinctly exposed in the top group – something about my recurring nightmares of meeting a nasty fate at the hands of a 400 kg gorilla! incidentally, I would have replied sooner but, as often happens, got caught out by the time zone difference and by the fact that I have to go to bed ridiculously early (I wanted to clarify that because I think this is a really important experiment).

I think there is one point I would like to discuss further: the length of the game. One of the things that attracted me to this group was the expressed preference for two-day matches, and, indeed, one of my other groups only plays 24-hour games. I would like to see a maximum of three days, not five, because I find that a major drag, and have a preference for two. What do other people think?

I personally like the shorter lengths. I doubt I would play 5-day.
I very much like your ideas and be included.
BUT I want to defend and include many who need longer playing times due to Business, family, Travel, and general demands our busy society has on our daily lives. I have seen time prevent some from having ability to make their moves during the allowed time. I NEVER Consider this a Win when time expires. I am older NOW and Guess I have developed more patience and understanding for others. Just my 2 cents. Bill - 66 - Las Vegas, Nv. U. S. A.

I prefer longer time controls, as I hate feeling rushed, although premium members never need to feel rushed because of the generous vacation allowance.
With slower time contols there will often be a few players who use all their time. This seems to happen in both matches and tournaments.

Yes, Lauri, I totally agree with this attempt as this is sort of what I use for all my groups. In fact, if you recall you and I worked out a team match using ratings so that they would be more in-line. It's really great for the group moral in particular the lower rated members. This gives them a chance to support the team without feeling like they are just going to lose to the big guns. The one thing I usually allow which helps the lower rates to improve their games is, I don't put a minimum rate, thus allowing the lower rates to play in higher rated matches, but never can a high rated play down. I have had good success with that arrangement as many lower rated like to try their game against a big gun once in awhile.
