Author Stephen Crane's novel based on the war stories told to him as a teenager by veterans of the America Civil War.  The story was so real that one man swore he fought alongside Crane at The Battle of The Wilderness. Stephan Crane was himself too young to have fought in that conflict.

1951 film version Preview with Audie Murphy, Bill Mauldin and Arthur Hunnicut.  Audie Murphy was awarded with The Congressional Medal of Honor in World War II and Bill Mauldin was the American GI's favorite cartoonist.  "That cow accidentally got in the line of fire.  Wake up the cooks."
