The Variation that's weird

Sort:

So I was playing Live chess, and a person showed me the weirdest variation I've ever seen... even worse than damiano defense

This is Alkheline defense: Brooklyn Variation... if anyone can make sense out of it please tell me

Mi_Amigo

How can anyone use something like this?

steelmonkey

looks like hes giving free tempo

Mi_Amigo

The sad part is I was white and I was actually played against this

steelmonkey

your position looks really good

ChessicallyInclined

Black's idea is that he can afford to give White the extra time, as he pushed a pawn out that can be easily attacked.

In my opinion, I don't think Black has enough compensation for the time, but some people think differently.

Wow! I've never seen something like that!

It looks OK, it kicks the opponent knight and takes the middle spot.

well... in real matches... nobody wants to give the other person more time

Not if they don't get anything in return- Black players in this line feel that they will get the time back by attacking e5, which White will be forced to spend time to defend. But then again, I don't like this line for Black, so I'm probably not the best person to tell you why people play it.

this is miles better than the damiano defense. not that it means much, but you should definitely not feel like you've been gifted a free win or something

Not weird, even Carlsen played it against Fraucent or some french GM in the 2013 world blitz championship as a troll, and literally smirked/laughed lol it’s on YouTube

That "lol" is enough to tell everyone he was just joking around

BetaSean

i think white wants to overextend the pawn but to be honest i would never play something like that

YVempati

Black is toying with White and just building up a bit of attitude like he can start catching you off guard with more surprising moves. I would use this to waste time if I had to.
