one thing to keep in mind is that rating is not necessarily indicative of skill. Other factors, such as win percentage vs. higher-rated players, must also be considered.
but there are players who played 2300+ who are also disgusted by the current (avoid 4th / betrayal) meta, so they prefer playing lower rated games where one doesn't witness any of that. Higher rated games are not fun anymore (at least not for me)
