Timman vs Enklaar

This came out of the reti opening and the game was a benoni type game except white had many advantages that black normally doesn't get. It is instructive in how it shows both direct and indirect control of the center in one game.

Very nice analysis, el. How do you think Black should have conducted the opening?

I think ...c5 was a bit premature because when black advances d4 in these positions white seems to have a lot of play. Black could have done a more solid c6 d5 setup and be flexible about the e pawn, or play a king's indian setup with ...d6 and ...e5, since in the king's indian the double fianchetto for white is not dangerous at all for black and my book says that type of position is equal.

These type of games with late pawn exchanges remind me of 'Pick-Up-Sticks'
