You advice good

but the pig is better

CupOfTheorem

I take a more conservative approach - not rushing to queen first, being overly aggressive etc, at least not in the opening and early middlegame. Once the opening phase has passed, I shuffle my pieces around trying to get them to good squares (a lot of central influence), and push my pawns slowly en masse to queen. This has been working well for me as I finish mostly second or first.

Though things can go horribly wrong at times. You have to take chances whenever they present themselves.

Keep an eye out for checks (yours and your opponent's), as being in check basically renders you unable to defend pieces (esp. Queens, Bishops and Rooks), and mating attacks.

I've had games where a player, trying to capture some material on another checked player (maybe a Queen) found himself in trouble when he got checked and lost his attacking piece, ie, he forgot he could be checked too.

Riptidejr

I usually don't go for a queen straight from the bat because it allows for the other players to build a defense while you have none, I usually try and move my king to the kingside area with a layout of

I focus on defense first, then move up pawn chains toward the center gradually but steadily.  Often times I get 2 extra queens within 5 or 6 moves (after having less than others for a while).

Fight hard to get the +20s when someone else resigns (and from checkmates).  That is a lot of points.  And pretend like the person opposite of you is your completely loyal friend - at least until 1 of your enemy players is dead.

My own defensive set up is:

                              B   P        P

                                   R   P

                                        K

So I have my King alone on the last rank, with my rook advanced to the second rank to defend the pawn right in front of the King.  This saves 2-piece rook and queen checkmates out of the blue.  The other pawns diagonally from the pawn in front of the king defend against out of the blue checkmates from diagonals.  I like to have an extra knight around as well to help defend against nearby threats.  This is a very effective defense against when my enemy on the side of my king fianchetttoes.

Oh yeah.. the bishop can help defend my rook from diagonal attacks while it lasts.  The good news is:  the process of exchanging off the bishop usually takes out one of the pieces that could execute a diagonal attack.

Riptidiejr you do not have a single queen in the screenshot

it is necessary to build a queen

1. d4 2. d5 3. d6 4. d7 5. d8 - Q! - that's the perfect start

First, I would look more closely. Second, It's RiptideJr not Riptidiejr. I extremely hope that I would not die because I'm being tie-dyed. Third, If you do this i's basically granted your piece will die. Sooner or Later. Fourth, I Always lose when I do this because the other players target me. Fifth, It is Not necessary to build a queen because I've won games without getting another queen.

My list of basic tips, for players below 1600.

1) Have all of your pieces defend each other, all of the time. Don't let a single pawn unprotected.
2) Don't allow any checks against your king. Better lose a pawn than allow a check.
3) Avoid exchanges of both pieces and pawns.
4) Grab any undefended enemy piece, and then bring your attacking piece back immediately.
5) Don't bother grabbing undefended pawns.
6) Defend proactively against any conceivable mating attack against you king.
7) Slowly advance your central pawn chain. Keep an eye at the base of your chain, it will be attacked.
8) Be patient.
9) Never resign. You could blunder a queen, a rook and a knight and still win!

5) Don't bother grabbing undefended pawns.

I agree with this.  Unless the you are currently at war with the owner of the pawn of course!

2) Checks can be acceptable if given by the player on your right, but do not allow a check from the player on your left.

5) Depends on the situation.

The rest are spot on.

The tips are tailored specifically for players below 1600. Above that level players are experienced enough to know when they can safely violate these simple guidelines. happy.png

Good advice. I like it.
