US CHESS EDUCATION PROGRAM -- WEBINAR
CHESS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY - PART 1 Sunday, February 25, 2024
Keeping with this year’s focus on chess being taught during the school day, CIE presents two school programs that introduce chess to students in elementary, middle and high school.
Baltimore Kids Chess League is a US Chess Title I grant winner that uses the funds it receives to travel to national scholastic championships. One of the schools it supports is Lakeland Elementary/Middle School. Teacher Veronica Hopkins teaches chess classes every day and runs a Lunch Bunch program. At Lakeland, the chess program focuses on community, increasing participation for girls and special education students, and socio-emotional learning.
St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, CT conducts a myriad of chess programs led by school chess advisor and math teacher Alvin Hamilton, and Chess Club President Laurel Aronian, a junior at St. Luke’s. Laurel is also the US Chess Girls Club Teen Ambassador since 2021. Her school offers Club Time on Monday and Thursday morning and showcases the power of student leadership and initiative in growing chess in the school and community.

Matan Prilleltensky, the Associate Executive Director of the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, will share instructional sequencing and curriculum teachers can use in their own programs. Special focus will be given to how children develop their vision of the board and master the basic skills, with plenty of training material for students to work on. The National Scholastic Chess Foundation is a nonprofit founded to bring the benefits of chess to children of all ages. It currently provides high quality chess instruction in New York, Connecticut, and Florida. Robert McKenzie, member of the US Chess Scholastic Council and a master classroom teacher, will explain how he uses chess to help at-risk young people develop their decision-making skills. There will be many opportunities for audience participation and dialogue between attendees and presenters. Moderator: Paul Swaney, CIE Committee member |
