I just lost a game of  "Variant: Petrified"

I do not know why or how , but the opponent just claimed the win in a lost position.

Is there a special rule or something that i missed?

Here is the game link : https://www.chess.com/variants/petrified/game/49759345/65/3

Your opponent had more points than you, and because you couldn't get any more points, they won. This is one of the stupid variants where you win if you have more points.

SDreamer

What do you mean i couldnt get any more points? there were many pawns i could get and Checkmate was also possible !?

krasibiel

Right, sorry, the game opened on the final position where all the pieces were blurred out. Yeah, idk why this happened, probably some nuanced rule which isn't stated.

Arseny_Vasily

the difference between white and black points is more than 20 points, so white can "claim win". white player could do it already on 31. move
in this variant, with an equal level of play, it is quite difficult to win by checkmate, so a point system was introduced to make the game less drawish and more competitive

SDreamer

Ok, that explains the result.

It is a stupid rule, it should really be explained somewhere

I think the capital letter P in the gamerules means it's a point system game.

Arseny_Vasily

true this is an omission here, but this rule is universally used in 4pc and explained there

Does the +20pt "claim win" apply to all point games?

TinyAltuve

ah that makes sense thanks happy.png

JkCheeseChess

why do people think game of points is stupid lol

it's really one of the most important game rules that is used in variants that would otherwise be forced draws and boring positions, so be thankful that you aren't playing a game where you just trade all the pieces and go into a king vs king endgame with no other strategy

Arseny_Vasily

in multiplayer games (including 4pc) the point system is one of the best options for determining the winner and the places of other players, but in duel games it looks more unusual and far-fetched (especially in chess variants), since in its many more successful alternatives to choosing the ultimate goal of the game

NoWellOkay

The points system adds way more complexity to the game of petrified. You must initiate trades, whilst not allowing your opponent the opportunity. You can even gambit in the hopes of winning purely on points. This also avoids draws in a particularly closed positional variant. The value of the point system is most obvious in standard 4 player ffa. Though it doesn't seem intuitive from the point of view of standard chess, you should try to maintain an open mind. This is just one of many rule sets that can be implemented as is seen fit.

I don't get this variant too much but it says "(black +20)" in the bottom which means he claimed a win.
