Variants Server Suggestions [Post-4PC Merge]

hello! can we make it more clear when it's your turn in fog of war? that seems to be a too common sticking point for beginners.

Anything visual would work. Maybe something flashing on the side of the screen with the words "your turn"

Avatar of zisal2029

Technically, we already have a sound that goes off in any variants game every time it's your turn. For the deaf, they might be able to add it.

In 3/4PC can we make "resingned and timed out sides become dead pieces" the default? Because in real life, the resigned and timed out players don't turn into rando bots that randomly move their king.

King wants to save his own life when his army is all dead, or doesn't fight for him

my Suggestions for rules for variants (edit rules):

modifing pieces (String): allows you to modify the moves of pieces that already exist using Betza notation: (piece notation):[Betza notation], Example 1: A:QNC now all amazons moves like a Queen, Knight and Camel, Example 2: U:WnN now all Xiangqi horses in a variant moves like a Xiangqi horse and like a Wazir, Example 3: V:NCZ(1,4) now all wildebeests moves like a Knight, Camel, Zebra (3,2 Leaper) and like a Giraffe (4,1 Leaper)

Custom promotions (string): set custom promotions for any piece: (notation of the piece, number of the rank):[notation of the piece after promotion], Example: N,8=O now knights are promoted to Knight-riders on the 8th Rank, Example 2: N,7=ON now knight are promoted to Knight-riders and Knights on the 7th Rank

Can you PLEASE not include the "10 second play or abort" restriction for Black's first move in Giveaway Chess?
I've lost so many games because i had to think for too long about what to do so I don't blunder the entire game, it's so infuriating

Avatar of ChessMasterGS

I think learning opening theory is also a possible solution?

Avatar of Sp00ksies

Openings work vastly differently in Giveaway, and you can blunder the entire game on turn 1 with even the most minor slip up. It's a very punishing gamemode and you should have some time to assess.

It's not like people have studied theory for hundreds of years for it, like regular Chess

It’s better if they add independent pieces. You can’t have Shogi if there are custom promotions but the rook and bishop have to be crowned at the beginning.

You are right, it would be too hard to code a system to modify pieces, but i dont think it would be too hard to code independent pieces, but shogi would be partially possible with modifying pieces and custom promotions, for example, for the dragon king/crowned rook:

T:RF (modifying the dabbaba-rider to make it move like a rook and a ferz)

promotion:

R,7 = RT

R,8 = RT

R,9 = RT

(Rook promotes to Rook or dabbaba-rider on the 7th, 8th or 9th Rank

Hi,
I would like to propose a new "ruthless" chess variant that combines chess 960 with a pair of "unavailable" symmetric squares from the c1-f8 area, randomly chosen.
The purpose of this mode would be to allow people who don't have time to study chess theory/openings (like me, a 1000 rated noob) to play "random" positions every time. I would like to see this deviation from chess960 to have fun myself and also to see what better players think of it, as the main point of this variant is to also mess with the power of the knight and bishop depending on positions (e.g. fortresses), without introducing new pieces, extra rules for moving pieces or modifying the board dimensions.
If it was proposed before or you think it's trash, please comment, I am happy to see what others think about it.

Changes that seem to subtract from a game with no apparent compensation are generally a bad idea. For example, Xiangqi and Janggi compensate for making the General’s fortress and eliminating Pawns with the Cannon, which adds tactical possibilities unique to them among the traditional variants of Chess, and barring the Generals facing on an open file or declaring it a draw offer.

Can you bring back the hyper fog of war leaderboard?

The leaderboards only appear if the required number of active players is reached, or else we’d have hundreds of irrelevant leaderboards

Avatar of Lucas1009991

I think we could have Shako on chess.com variants, it is a popular variant, it would only need 2 new fairy chess pieces:

Elephant (Ferz + Alfil)

Cannon (moves like a Rook but it must jump over a piece to capture)

Can they make fog of war tournaments? If so why haven’t the done them.

Gothic still showing the wrong notation. Squares are wrong and the piece abbreviations are supposed to be C for Chancellor and A for Archbishop. Cited as the #1 reason people stop playing it on here according to Discord forums off of the site. No way to export the PGN to any replay/analysis tools.

Just because it's different doesn't mean it's wrong 🤷‍♂️

Of course it's wrong!

The site of the guy who invented the game tell us the name of his pieces.

Those are the names on chess.com too, not sure why you are deliberately misinterpreting both of our words; expecting the abbreviations to be exactly the same is unreasonable when multiple pieces can start with the same letter.
