Variants suggestion

I think there should be a way for us to design our own chess variants, and I know it is possible to make a custom position, but I'm not talking about custom positions. I mean there should be a way for us to make our own fairy chess pieces, and what I mean by that is, while you are setting up a custom position there should be an option to merge two or more pieces into one piece. For example, you could shift click on the queen and the camel, once both pieces are selected there would be a button on the side labeled "Merge" if you decided to click the button there would be a pop up menu which will have 3 boxes, the first box would allow you to upload a picture of what the custom piece should look like, the second box would give you the option to name your piece, and the last box would let you decide how your piece would move, after all other boxes are filled out there should be a "Save" button which will let you permanently save your custom piece so you could add it to the board.

Good idea

there are already like one billion forums saying this exact same thing. we don't need more, I'm pretty sure everyone knows this idea now

Yeah, its a good idea but it would be too hard to code, It would be better if chess.com just adds new individual pieces

I feel a lot of opportunities for offense and abuse here. These are one of the main blocking issues, not the "hard to code". Asking admins/cgas to verify each name and picture is not an option. And making it possible to create a variant that looks literally like garbage is bad for Variants image either.

That said, chess piece builder IS coming one day.

I have two questions:

1. Why is this idea always suggested with a view to adding a new super-queen? The queen is already strong enough that nothing stronger really matters.

2. How will you check against “custom” pieces that already exist?

1: the custom piece creator could also be used to create weaker pieces

2: they could add a feature that if a custom piece moves and captures the same way as a piece then you can’t create that piece

I understand your point, allowing people from creating their own fairy chess pieces could ruin the image of variants and make everyone say “Chess.com chess variants are bad!”, our creativity shouldn’t be limited but the image of the Chess.com chess variants also must stay good, in my opinion pieces from popular/historical variants should be added but really REALLY popular pieces also should be added, but it’s most likely that chess.com variants will stay the same for a VERY long time

The problem with 1 is that the suggestion is so obviously about the poster’s own creativity, the image of the Chess.com chess variants be damned.

Okay, I think it’s better to just add new individual pieces, but this is really unlikely to happen
