Welcome to Improvement Seekers Online.

We are a group of players that are serious about to improving our chess skills. We work together to accomplish this goal by studying openings as a group, analyzing each others annotated games and discussing them afterwards, following a study plan so that all members are learning similar material, and providing chess information in the way of books, articles and videos.

What is required for new member:

-abide by the rules of chess.com

-familiarize your self with the "model of chess improvement" and read the attached articles

-start 3-7 online games and write down your thoughts for every move of play in a word processor (microsoft word, text edit, notepad etc...)

-submit 2 of your best games that you have lost and annotated without the use of an engine. (you may post them in the forums)

-stop playing live games for a week and do not play under 30 minute live games for another week

-sign up for the free online tactics trainer at http://chess.emrald.net/ and complete at least 50 puzzles a week. use the same handle as you use here on chess.com when you sign up. This is not required for members that have access to the Tactics Trainer here on chess.com but is still recommended.

This looks like a good but not overburdening schedule.

I have started 3 new games and will be writing down my thoughts behind every move.

For tactics trainer I will be using chesstempo, I have already attempted 686 puzzles this month.

I have a loss from an OTB tournament I should go over, so I'll use this as an excuse to do that.

Thanks for accepting me into the group, hopefully this will prove useful to all concerned.

Welcome Sidford_Knight, please post your the game in our groups forums and we will add our comments. Once our member count increases we will start to organize group activities. I have contacted a moderator/coach here at chess.com about assistance with this group and am looking forward to hearing back.

4everPrutser

Hello everyone,

This group looks very promising; let me give a small introduction of myself first.

I am 4everPrutser and learned chess at a very young age (5), I played a few tournament on school and even joined a chess club for a short period. Sadly I choose other hobbies over chess and quit shortly afterwards. 2 years ago I started playing a few games again on the internet, but nothing serious. Now last September I decided to try and get more serious again. I again joined a chess club and I am now playing OTB matches every week. I would guess I am rated around 1400 KNSB rating.

I agree with most of the things for improvement you outlined allheart, Dan Heisman seems to lay out a solid plan for improvement. I am however not to sure about the study plan 1200-1400 on chess.com, which I already did and I felt like it focuses too much on things that are irrelevant for such "weak" players. Might be that I had already knew most of this information that was in there. Getting a good thought process + doing loads and loads of tactics + reviewing your own games seem like the best way to go for me. I can play so positionally brilliant however if I keep giving away pieces I will not win the game.

So my personal idea for improving is for now as following:
-loads of weaker tactics on chess.com 1000-1400 rated solve as many as possible during short time to really improve pattern recognition

 - Study basic endgames (Silman’s complete endgame course until 1600rated)

 - Play as many OTB games as possible with long time control and analyze afterwards with opponent/other club players

Greetings,

Welcome 4everprutser

I do agree with you that tactics are the most import factor for new players. I do believe that strategy can and should be also taught in a basic forum. I would like all members to have gone through the chess.com 1200-1400 study plan to ensure that we are all on the same page in terms of basic knowledge.

welcome to our club

Well, I've just joined the group.  I'm "theweaponking" and I learned chess from my father at around four or five years of age.  I never took an interest in the game until three years ago when I was fourteen.  I signed up here on chess.com and immediately fell in love with chess.  Now, three years later, I'm a fairly good amateur.  My correspondence chess rating is low because I haven't played it in eons, but my live chess ratings are 1631 Standard, 1592 Blitz, and 1500 Bullet (used to be 1700 until I quit after realizing that bullet isn't real chess).

So yeah, that's pretty much it.  I've wanted a chess coach and a training regimen for the longest time, but finances have been the major roadblock there.  Other than a few strategic concepts and openings a former friend showed me and what I've seen of chess.com's training tools and videos, I'm entirely self-taught.

Well i am hoping to find some GM games with notes on them. That works for me.

Playing higher rated players i feel more comfortable and easier. They do logical moves. Players with a rank below 1500 are desperate and likely to follow a wild plan of attack which makes them dangerous!

????

What to do?

Any Strong players on white here?

Defense is the key to winning games. I figure if i can defend against the best that have a Strong Game then i am on my way to being a complete player. It takes real committment to play and learn defense. Very few articles on the subject also.

Unrated games naturally and only!!!!!!!

Also let me know if it is from this group by putting Study o Practice in game title.
